i have a 2900xt and as a power saving method i decided to cut down the gpu and mem 2d clocks by over half.

gpu 200 mhz

mem 148 mhz

3d clocks are 750 gpu and 830 mem.

original 2d clocks were 500 gpu 500 mem { roughly }

amps used to be 30.0 a now they are 11.0 a , with a gpu temp of 32 c .

im just wondering how low i can go in 2d mode as im thinking the power i save in 2d mode would justify somewhat the power this baby uses in 3d mode.

That's lower than I have seen a lot of people acheive so it varies between cards.

You can use rivatuner to drop the volts to the card to drop your ampage even lower but I am led to beleive you have to manually set that for 2d everytime you start your computer.

Nice drops in amps btw.

If You feel up to it editing the Cards bios will give You the best results and I've given up with anything except CCC as they all fight with ATI's drivers for control

I run a pair of HD 3870's in crossfire with much reduced vcore in 2D and 3D, Laugh is the performance is still the same when required ;)

as i understand it, any editing of the bios destroys the signature, and that's not good. unless i can find a signed bios , im not sure i want to go down that route.

Your only changing values, sometimes checksum correction would change maybe the logo or something non-critical
Bottom line is 5 mins to reflash back to original factory bios !

The Cards are to complicated with Multiple power phases etc to do what You want to do with just software without a lot of hassle !

it would be beneficial as the clocks i set do not stay that way after a restart.

can you point me in the right direction to what tools i could use, articles etc?

thanks

Ati Tray Tools allows you to decide which profile you want to load up with. I had a 2D profile that always loaded with windows, then when I wanted to play games I just swapped to either stock 3D or overclocked 3D.

That should give you everything you need?

Sorry to hijack this a little:

Anyone know of something that can underclock Nvidia cards on bootup? I want to set my 8800GT a lot lower in 2D mode, but keep forgetting to switch it in Ati Tool.
Cheers!

There are some good Nvidia bios editors...But last Year I spent lots of time on a 640mb 8800 without much sucess ! But things might be different now.

Ati tray tools lets you tell it which profile you want it to boot with and then automaticaly change to 3d clocks when it goes into 3d mode. I'm prety sure it works fine with Nvidia as well.

Just installed it, and the answer is nope.... it doesnt :(

Anyone know anything else that can do it at boot time?

:( Sorry my mistake, i always mix up ati tool and ati tray tools. Rivatuner gets a lot recomendations although ive never used it.

rivatuner doesn't support modding at the driver level for ati cards, which means that you are unable to do 2d and 3d profile clocks. bummer. :(
