Oh dear.

Cords exposed is not good - what would have happened if one had blown out at 80mph?

What were the new tyres you got?

Damn!

And you said the tread/tyres looked good and expensive not long ago too....

Eyesight test time methinks!

Seriously? I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't check the inside of my tyres unless I'm given a reason to - now I know he had a reason to, but it sounds like he didn't fully understood the matter. I'll usually just stick my finger in the outer groove and run it round until I find a wear indicator - I bet most people do the same.

At least he found the problem :)

Nothing like burying your head in the sand eh? Not exactly hard to either get your head down low (for the back) or turn full-lock (for the front).

I check mine all the time. It's easy and a sensible thing to do.

On your bicycle, or do you do it for buses and taxis? :p

I check my tyre tread all over regularly, in fact I pull on my drive with full lock and always give my tyres a glance to make sure they are safe.

just think how annoyed youd be at getting points on your licence for somethign as daft as tyres

Would have no grounds to be annoyed, they would be quiet desrved to get points.

Nah I knew they'd gotten low the last time I checked but then I didn't expect them to wear that quickly till I checked again.

why didnt you change them when they got low then ?

you dont carry on driving when the tyres get illegal and drive it till the cords start showing :/

I'm fortunate enough to be able to feel when something is wrong with my car.
So can any competent driver, however you typically won't feel that a single inch wide strip of a single tyre is below the legal limit.

So why not... just check?

I thought you said you checked the tyres?

They don't suddenly show cord overnight. You must have driven on them whilst dangerously low to end up with that!
Unintentionally I guess, I had noticed they were low on the inside but they were no where close to being that bad so I kept on using them but it wasn't long until they ended up like this.

I just went the model up and got RE050As

You rely on feel to tell you if the inside of your tyre is worn?

Not directly, but something would likely be wrong if the outside was well within the limits and the inside was under.

Like I say, I've managed just fine for nearly seven years now.

For the record, I'm not saying I never check the inside of the tyre, occasionally I might (if the outside tread is past 3mm for any length of time for whatever reason), but I've managed to catch anything that might cause uneven wear by feel every time, without fail.
