Unemployed 'must learn English'

If they can't speak English they shouldn't even be here let alone be claiming unemployment benefit.
I disagree, but they should be making an effort to learn.

A problem in immigrant communities seems to be their non-willingness to learn English, and so make integration much more difficult, if not impossible. There's only so far we can go to be accepting and multi-cultural, if people aren't willing to learn our language they certainly shouldn't be allowed to claim benefits.

i worked at a theme park where solvacians worked. they wer taken on as cheap labour. they learnt the health and safty manuals for each ride and recited them in the tests so they could work on the rides, they didnt actually understand them sothey wer dangerous on the rides!! (you know like when you learnt your french gcse speaking material off by heart but hadnt a clue what it meant). a year later I re-apply and get turned down for the job. There was a greater % of slovacians that year, a foreigner got my job?? hmmm i wonder
As for the topic. STOP SPONGING OFF US!! If you come here to work thats one thing. If you come here and dont work I look down my nose right at you. As for coming here and sponging without learning english, well thats a damn disgrace. Ive always worked; Fair enough im a student but ive always been brought up such that 'you want something get off your ass and earn it' way
I also heard on the radio today that 1/3 houses in the Uk are on tax credits!! the countrys full of flipping spongers!!
englands a soft spot with rediculus laws. the english workers tax goes on other peoples university fees not their own childs, and pays for others to sit on their ass all day You got it wrong, reward the ones who are working not the lazy ppl!

I think a family with 2 kids get taxcredits even with an income of around £50k annually. Those taxcredits could be maybe £25 per year. Maybe £2k a year towards nursery fees.
So the tax credits thing is a red herring. Indeed if both parents are working and using a child daycare thing then they are likely to get a (tiny) sum of tax credits towards it.

Good.

We should also likewise visitors to other foreign speaking countries make an effort too. When I am abroad, one thing which annoys me is the ignorance of people who make no effort at all to try and communicate no matter how little you know in their native language.

Why would someone want to live here if they can't speak the language?

Sure I understand if they come on a trip or for a short holiday but it seems a bit strange to come here to live and not work or learn the language, strange people indeed.

not really, i know several of the polish lads in my company brought their wives and kids over with them, they all live near each other and if the wives dont work they spend time with other polish mums. They dont need to speak english.

So again why do they want to come here if they don't care to learn the best language in the world from its homeland and gain its countless benefits?

It seems rude and slightly offensive for them not to to be quite honest.

dont know mate, i cant speak for them.

Just pointing out that it was easy not to learn the language when your amongst your own in your own little community.

I think its not about not wanting but rather for some thinking they are too old for that. I mean people that are in their 40s or 50s, comming here to make some quick buck for home, wouldnt be much into English. In the case of eastern Europeans though, that doesnt mean they are stupid cauz many of those "oldies" can be in fact bilingual with knowing their native language + Russian which in their days was like English for the new generation. Speaking of the younger generations(with me being one of them), you could hardly find someone that wouldnt eventually pick up with English after living here for a while.
