Im doing applied cmp at UEA 1st year

my problem is this...im quite litterally scraping by with the course, failing a module last semester and struggling like nobodies business this semester, yes i know unis meant to be tough, but no matter what i do i cant get my head round any of the work

my dilema, should i carry on scraping through or just cut my losses and accept i am really not uni material/need to rething where my abilities actually lay, if any at all even exist.

at the end of the day this is uni, its costing me money, and i dont see much point being here if i am really not upto standard...hell, i was very short of the grade requirements to even get here which said a lot.

so what do you guys think? im going home at the weekend but really dont want to speak to mum about it as it is her birthday this weekend, and definately dont want to bring it up with dad as he would probably disown me

personally im thinking jacking it in and accepting life as it is and see where job experience takes me...

there is little i actually enjoy, but no, i dont enjoy my course...part of the reason i want to jack it in aswell, i have direction in my life, no plans, no motivation

I failed a C++ module earlier this year and to be quite frank, I was stuck up my own backside and thought I'll whizz through everything like I've done with other languages. Huge mistake that was, I also failed my C++ exam and felt like rubbish as it wasn't matching upto my standard in other areas of the degree where I was excelling for a first etc.

What was I told to do? Restart the whole C++ module in my own time and read up on some books. I dislike having to put in extra effort but instead of accepting it as a loss see it as something that may well help you improve in an area. Software Engineering is more maths orientated which I just can't stand!

I just couldn't leave everything now. For me personally if I were to drop uni, I'd feel weak in other areas. Stick with it and try your best I say. Tutors and course leaders are there to help, if you do want to try you will succeed.

However, some may see applied computingas a 'general' degree. If you have a plan, in regards to working your way up the job ladder, then so be it.

Either way, I wish you the best of luck in whichever path you take. It can become difficult.

no-one ever said life was easy...i might bring it up with advisors next week and might ruin mums birthday with it, whilst i only failed 1 module my marks in the other 2 modules are nothing to write home about.

as for plans, i never planned anything, only came to uni really cos i didnt feel ready for the "real world"

yes i would also see myself as a failure, but right now i think i need to take a step back and sort myself out...can always come back to uni in a few years as a mature student or some lark if need be

Why dont you finish the year even if it means working extra hard and then take a year out?

because then id have to burden my mates with helping to find someone to fill the room and rent of a house next year...

that and i dont see me lasting on this course no matter how hard i work

Are you scraping because you're not trying?

I was finding physics much much too hard until I started concentrating on my course 100%...

What do you see yourself doing if you drop out?

Well if you know your not going to last deffinatly then you have answered your own question.

What year are you in? What are you studying?

Why not consider changing course? Get to keep the lifestyle but, whatever you do, make sure you choose something you are actually interested in.

I've had some real trouble on my course. The main thing was that in first year I felt I was doing tons more work than most of my friends (they all did different subjects) but was still getting the same or worse marks.

You can either stick at it and see if things improve (they did for me - uni's been an awful lot of work, and unlike others I dont have a lot of extracurricular stuff going on just because of time constraints), but thanks to a huge effort last year I'm on course for a scrape 2:1. It can be done! But it really does take commitment.

My strategy was to switch course, but not enough that I had to resit any years. I changed from Physics to Natural Science (Physics/Philosophy), which made the course ten times more interesting and that much easier to stick at.

Good luck!

edit - too slow! What trojan said!

I'd already put down a deposit on living with some guys in my second year of uni. I pulled out of the course, and got a job for a year instead so I could still live with them. Best year of my life. It gave me time to think about what I wanted to do, as well, which was visual effects as opposed to physics ... so I spent the year sorting that out as well.
