Unibody MBP HD Playback...

Yeah you had better run!! Balderdash to you comments. It wont be the macbooks power that is the problem. I can play this sort of thing on my old macbook 2.0 ghz core duo as long as I have it on the computer and not an external hd.

GAYS.

Lets talk about me and my MBP. I'm worrying a bit now. It seems as if the QOS download perhaps maybe dodgy or simply too much for it but thats what is surprising.

I have plenty of other HD movies, like Top Gun  in 1080p which plays great (and thats over FW800 from my drobo). Other movies like Bourne in 1080p plays sweet. They can be jerky sometimes but thats because I don't think VLC buffers like QT does?

I haven't got any MAC based game to throw at it so its hard to work out what the issue (if any) there is?

/Back to drawing board....more tests are needed.

Is QOS The largest movie you have (in terms of filesize)? By my conservative maths, 12,000MB /120 (assume 120 min film) = 100MB a minute = 1.6ish MB a sec, which is about 13.5Mbit a sec.

I am still unsure whether your DROBO is connected via ethernet (100 or 1000?) wifi or what.

100 MBit would not be able to stream that much data, is my point, nor would 54g. Gigabit and any local connection s(USB/FW) would be fine.

i dont know about that, i just did a little test with my laptop and pc and managed a sustained 7.9/MB (63.2Mb/sec) second over a 100Mb nic....no reason why it wouldnt handle 14Mb/sec

I lost a zero somewhere :)

I ended up calculating the movie was churning out 14/MB (about 112Mb/sec which is too much for a 100Mbit network).

14/MB would be too much but the value I should have come up with 1.4 :)

(An average 100mbit network should be churning out between 8-10/MB so your test proves that right, at the low end of the scale).

Anyway mystery continues....
