Uniforms at work

We technically have a policy
- Shirt
- Jeans (if they are not ripped, just plain jeans) otherwise work trousers
- Shoes - plain shoes (work shoes)

Most people play ball and where a shirt and either jeans or trousers and proper work shoes. Some don't though.
I did for like 2 days and just gave up.
Been wearing t-shirt, jeans, plimsoles and a hoodie for 9 months, nothings been said.

I have no problem with dress policies, I just have a problem with not being able to buy trousers or shirts that I want from M&S or similar.

Why is wearing a uniform tacky? Why you think it wont fit right? You haven't tried it on yet have you?
I feel sometimes uniform can look nice and professional and I dont think I've ever seen one thats "tacky".
I think you just want to look like you work in the law company to everyone else rather than IT company (if Ive read right). I dont want to sound mean but its a bad reason to get annoyed having to wear a uniform.

No its not about fitting in or pretending like I am lawyer. I have been internally employed at law firns before and worked for other types of companies and out source companies I've always worn my own clothes. Nearly everyone who works in the city in offices wears their own clothes.

The clothes they want me to wear are near identical to what I wear most of the year anyway. A white shirt and black trousers. The only difference is the logo on the shirt and that they will be cheap and won't fit as well as my store bought trousers and shirt.

I only wear a suit in summer.

Seriously I know you think I'm being a penis but have you tried this uniform on?
If it's basically the same as what you wear anyway then where is the issue?
If it's not a great fit take it and have it altered it'll still be cheaper than buying your own clothes and you'll be happy with the fit.

In the same vein as you thinking I'm just going to disagree with whatever you say you're just going to look for a way to hate a uniform you've not even gotten your hands on yet.

Just leave as you're obviously looking for a reason to get out, job done.

big fan of uniforms....
1. I don't have to worry about what to wear.
2. I don't mess up my own good clothes at work.
3. Reduces the amount of smell people at work.
4. Tax allowance for washing your uniform at home.

I don't wear a uniform at the moment but the last time I did, they was re-enforcing uniforms with the girls in admin, and one of the girls was upset, she came to tell me that she was being sent home because she forgot to was her tops and came in normal clothes.

I had a spare polo in my car, so I offered her my car keys and said get the spare polo top at the back of my car. She came back with my keys wearing the top, but it was too big for her, so she tied it up showing her tummy; asking how she looked.

"Smoking dear... but I think your missing the point why they making you wear a uniform."

Leaving a good job over an logo on a shirt is not the behavior of someone rational.
Clearly the job is crap anyway if this is what causes you to leave.
Just be honest, you hate your job, dress upto pretend you have a better one to people you do not know and now wish to use not being able to use this social crutch as an excuse to find a new job.

Its the principle of it. You may not be familiar with that sort of thing.

The job is not that bad, well it was better before the big company bought it but that's life and i just get on with it, but uniforms, that crosses the line and it realy opens up the door for more crazy rules and behaviour from the new company. So i get the feeling this is just a start of what is to come. I get the feeling like i am back at school.

Do you want everyone to think you are a high flying city lawyer on the tube?

Well people have spent years working in these law firm positions, one woman 21 years working for the same law firm but now works for the third company that was outsourced and tupe. Now they are asking her to wear a uniform. It is a bit demeaning and unnecessary. It sort of works to demote IT to a nameless face where the people have built relationships with the clients, they are now seen as different with a uniform.

You ARE different, you're an IT support worker, pretty much the same as the cleaner who comes in to vacuum the place wearing a company top.

I think you're overestimating how much anyone will care about how their IT support dress themselves.

What happened to that girl in Pret anyway? Did that ever go anywhere groen?

I work in IT. We get given shirts, fleeces and polo shirts.
I wear the shirt, trousers and shoes at customer site on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday I wear what I like at home office. Normally the polo shirt with jeans or trousers.
Friday I try not to work at all ;)
