Hey guys,

Today I received the plantronics gamecom commander headset from OcUK.

These: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-018-PT&groupid=702&catid=1058&subcat=1719

I have to say I'm not overly impressed. They sound ok and the mic is decent, but they're cripplingly uncomfortable. They're very tight, and I know this will improve over time with use, but the strap adjustment is absolutely terrible and next to useless as it only remains in position for about 8 seconds.

With them dropping so much in price I got tempted too easily and I'm most likely going to return them to OcUk shortly.

My previous two headsets were roccat Kaves: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-000-RC&groupid=702&catid=1058&subcat=1719

Both have broken in the same way (cable fray as it reaches the headset) and the Mic's on both became lose and poor quality after 6 months of use. The upside was the relatively exceptional positional audio which I enjoy a lot in gaming.

So now again I'm looking for replacements. £180 is really my top end budget with north of £200 being out of reach. I would prefer a built in mic as im on TS 90% of the time im on the computer. So a decent mic would be nice.

I'd be open to going headphone+ mic but would prefer not to.

What can you guys suggest?

My sound card is a creative X-Fi fatality + a bunch of other silly names. (got it years ago when I was an even bigger idiot that now. I'd be willing to go USB though If needed.

The steelseries siberia elites seem to get good reviews for "gaming" headsets, though the mic doesn't appear to win any awards.

Basically a bit lost! Thanks for your help!

If you insist on having a built in mic then your best option is the sennheiser PC 350 SE or Sennheiser G4ME ONE(both more or less the same thing) or Sennheiser G4ME ZERO or Sennheiser PC 360 (again game zero is the new pc360) the mic is great a lot of game broadcasters use them and the mics crystal clear and very nice quality but I wouldn't go paying much over £120 for one which is what the price should be really, the pc360 or game one will cost you around £180 -£200 though but not worth the money.

Most people will say clip on mic + another stereo headphone though over a headset as headsets are mostly not that great compared to what you could get if going the HQ headphone and clip on mic route. But if you want it all in one you can snag a PC 350 SE for under £120 spending over that you are much better off going down the clip on mic route for example there are headphones you can buy for £100-£130 which will sound way better than the pc 350 se such as £99 akg k550 beyer dynamic dt770 LE/990 audio technica m50 but then you have to find a decent mic.

What are the best options mic wise. Without being stupid on cost obviously.

I'd probably prefer a desk mic to clip on. Though again, open to both.

Thanks!

Cant help you there no experience with the mics other than knowing the 350SE one is great.

In this price range my shortlist would be

AKG K550 (closed)

Beyer dynamic DT770 LE 32ohm DT770 80ohm DT770 250ohm (closed) the latter two would be "ok" but really do need an amp to drive them well.

Beyer Dynamic DT990 PRO (semi open)

Am tempted to say get the phillips fidelio x1 and a clip on mic not sure you want to spend 200 ish though.

You need to leave the gamecoms over something slightly larger than your head for about 2 weeks before they are wearable. Not a fan of them anyhow the sound reproduction is boomy and loosely controlled - just about does service for gaming though if thats all you do.

Can't say I'd buy anything other than Sennheiser for gaming headsets anyhow.

Thanks guys,

I'm certainly returning the gamecoms. Not just the pressure they place (mostly due to being new) but the cups are really uncomfortable, and as i mentioned the strap adjustments its none functional! So essentially useless!

Will check out the above options, thats guys!

Never had any real problems driving most headsets off my x-fi btw - though some can do a bit better with a headphone amp but you won't suffer any significant problems with most.
