United States Grand Prix 2013, Austin - Race 18/19

So without spilling any details, since I didn't watch the race (have also not touched this thread much at all!), is it worth a watch?

I know who won since it's hardly surprising anyway, but know nothing else.

When Skeeter says a Vettel win was boring, you know it was a terrible race.

Can we still say for certain it is a great circuit? We have had 2 races there, one was pretty good, the other pretty boring. That is hardly definitive.

The V8 Supercars races were great, and the WEC was apparently good too. All the drivers love the layout.

Although I'm not sure on the jump in the shortened layout!

I'd like to think the chassis is scanned every time it returns to the factory. I don't know the logistics of it but potentially the chassis could have been 'on the road' since Singapore? The teams don't carry the X-Ray kit or whatever they use around with them.

"discovered a crack in his chassis back at the factory"

Merc has got to get things like this sorted for next year, it should have been spotted the day after it was cracked.

Agreed.

It seemed odd that Lewis was struggling so much. Rumours were flying that it was a mental thing due to breaking up with Nicole or that Lewis was still struggling with the brakes. Turns out it was the chassis and no one noticed for at least one race weekend. If that crack has been there longer it starts to explain why he's struggled so much in the second half of this season.

I'm not suggesting that this alone has contributed to him going backwards in every race since Belgium (until yesterday) but it may have had an effect.

I've just crunched some numbers for the race to 3rd in the WDC between Hamilton and Webber:

Lewis is six points ahead of Mark but he's got one race win and Webber hasn't won this season, so if they end up on equal points Lewis gets 3rd place.

If Webber:
  • Wins he gets 3rd in the WDC
  • Comes 2nd Hamilton needs to finish 4th or higher
  • Comes 3rd Hamilton needs to finish 5th or higher
  • Comes 4th Hamilton needs to finish 7th or higher
  • Comes 5th Hamilton needs to finish 8th or higher
  • Comes 6th Hamilton needs to finish 9th or higher
  • Comes 7th or lower Hamilton gets 3rd in the WDC

Even if Rosberg won in Brazil and Webber and Hamilton DNF'd he could only manage 4th but it is still possible that Nico could jump Webber in the last race of the season.

In terms of the WDC, there's not going to be much else to excite the final race:

Alonso has secured 2nd, Kimi will finish top five, Grojean will finish 7th, Massa 8th… there's a little battle between PDR, Hulkenburg and Perez for 10th-12th. Sutil should finish 13th and the two Torro Rosso's might be in a position to scrap each other for 14th but I expect the six-point gap will be enough to secure Riccardo's position.

I'd like to see Bottas scrap with Gutierrez for 16th but in the grand scheme of things this is much of a muchness.

With the WCC the big battle is for 2nd between Mercedes, Ferrari and Lotus.

Ferrari need 16 points more than Mercedes to jump them into second, Lotus need 34 points to jump Mercedes and 18 points to jump Ferrari. Everyone else is pretty much secure in their current positions.

Based on the last few races, I can't see the above happening unless there are some big surprises like a Lotus 1-2 and RBR, Mercedes and Ferrari all DNFing…

Roll on 2014 and new regs.

Not sure about Merc but in our case it is only visually inspected if there has been a incident. This in some cases will include a scan of the area in question.
