When you apply to a university what are the main things it looks for in a personal statement? Also, does it use A.S levels or Predicted A levels as a guideline to making offers?

I tried UCAS's website but I can't find the answer.

Thanks. :)

They probably use both AS grades and predicted A-level grades to make their decision.

Txt *** is always a winn0r.

Sorry but the late stage at which you're applying worries me, is this something to do with clearing?

Personal statement should be concise and well-structured. It'd only really be scrutinised if there were competition for places. Include why you want the course, where you hope to get because of it, what attracts you to the university, and a little about your extracurricular stuff. Don't worry yourself sick over it.

Extra curricular activities are a great one to mention. Talk about your motivation to learn and succeed, and your enthusiasm/energy.
Take your time over this, if it is a highly contested course this could be what wins the place for you.

I applied before the days of A.S... but iirc offers were made on predicted grades, with conditions of achieving a certain number of points. So if I was predicted certain grades, the uni could ask for points equal to something higher or lower, depending on the demand for the course.

Maybe he is applying for next year?

This early? It starts in like November AFAIK.

"Applications for 2007 year of entry may be submitted to UCAS from mid-September 2006"

Its about time to start working on it in all honesty, or it could be clearing.

"All applications we receive after 30 June 2006 are entered directly into Clearing."

Either way, why is it worrying?

Oxbridge apps have to be in by Oct 15th don't they? Maybe November, I forget. There's nothing wrong with thinking ahead a bit.

You'll probably want to include things like why you're interested in the subject, why you think you want to study it at uni, and extra work that you've done on the subject outside the class room. And then sports/music and other stuff that you do that makes you a more rounded individual.

But if you're applying to Oxford or Cambridge you need to get the application and personal statement in and done before some date in October. :)

Basically, I messed up my A.S levels (BBBC when I was looking more AAAC) and though I'm confident I can fix the mess up and get AAA at A-Level I wanted to know if it will mean I won't get any offers at all. I'm want to go to Durham or Warwick so I know I might have messed up the oppurtunity. :(

Depends what you are applying for and to where

edit: though even some of the most competitive courses will consider applicants with your grades (especially with good, achievable predicted grades)

I wouldn't have thought having BBBC is messing up your A-Levels, unless you're aiming for say Oxbridge, which means they'll want you to have straight As first time round and extracurricular activities too.

I'm looking into doing my application soon, i just dont know what my "Predicted grades are". My problem is i enjoy the subject not trying to get "top grades" etc by exam techniques etc i just have a pashion for the subject.

In two subject i got C's i was 5 and 8 marks off B's which sucks - Do universities look at your marks rather than ** grades?? :)

I don't think so no. I think they just look at the grades as that's what you've put into UCAS. Cambridge asks for module scores though.

Definitely make it appear that you show great interest and enthusiasm for the course you are applying to. Worked a treat when I babbled on about visiting Tokyo for my Jap degree.

Only at some colleges.

Oh, I thought that was on the CAF, bit of a blur now, almost two years ago.

If you're aiming for Warwick or Durham they should give you an interview which will really give you a chance to really prove that you deserve an offer.

...extracurricular activities too.
In my experience, you don't need any extra-curribulars whatsoever. They're only bothered about academic ability, and the potential to undertake the course.
