University Question - Internet Policies

i wont comment on the standard, what everyone will do stuff


but i can say that as long as you got a connection to the UNI intranet, you will have unlimited, unrestricted internet after youve messed around with some settings :P
 
at newcastle uni halls we got 40MB unrestricted internet. could upload download torrent all day long no problem. it had some serious port blockage though so took a while to find a work around in order to play cs and guildwars. never found a way to play xbox live. but even after cheating our way around the system they never said anything and in our flat we must have downloaded at least several hundred films and thousands of albums as well as played "banned" computer games all day long. i miss uni internet.
 
I'll be testing out the library connection tonight, I'm 2mins walking distance from the uni and don't have the net set up in my new house I move into today.

I have a feeling the only way they can restrict my bandwidth is by putting a cap on each mac address connected to the network.

I've found a cool little program to spoof your mac address to whatever you want though :)

Yea its not bad. I have quite a bit of trouble with various games etc but my 360 works so I can't complain :p. Apparently its going to be a lot less restricted this year so hopefully no more game problems for me :)
 
All free at Plymouth and Bournemouth.....looks like a 10mbit port on both and Plymouth allowed everything except online gaming and P2P, but Bournemouth seems a little stricter....it has various esoteric ports that I need blocked (even over plain HTTP - Plymouth was smart and only blocked the HTTPS ones which can't be snooped on), but does allow SSH out.

Can't beat going on Plymouth campus though and hooking up to a machine with a gigabit connection to the main network :cool: (though I think most are 100mb)

Highly unlikely unless the network is run by monkeys :p

That reminds me actually. In Plymouth you have to connect to the VPN no matter where you are, if I remember right, but in Bournemouth halls you just plug and play. That VPN comes in very handy when you're abroad and need to watch Wimbledon :D (Not that I'd know of course) - but seriously it is handy when you're in a questionable place and need a secure connection (edit: or of course access to the uni network)

Yup, but why you'd want to risk your uni life by downloading questionable content on campus is up to you :D Our lecturer always extolled the virtues by saying he had to do some late-night Linux ISO downloading. I believe him too!

I'll just do it wirelessly with a diff mac address, save the risk. I don't really see how I can be caught downloading over HTTP?
 
Kingston University here. When i lived in halls we were given an INSANE internet connection (we worked out it was approximately 50mbit per building with 9 people in each) which was shared so if i blitzed it at night it was fantastic.

Ports wise they completely blocked P2P and most game ports were closed however if you asked the technicians nicely they would typically open the ports for you (happened for me with steam so i could buy Ep1). My flatmate ended up getting a rapidshare account and downloaded insane amounts of questionable content without repercussion.

You can't really, as long as you don't transmit any identifiable information, and you aren't the only person within range of the access point. ;)

Failed already.

I'm in the library now, getting 2mb/s. 108KB/s dl rate.

I'm half tempted to bring in an ethernet cable with me next time and see what sort of speeds I can get over that?

If you do that you will be detectable by cctv footage.
 
At Birmingham it's free and is completely unrestricted, but there's a 600MB/day bandwidth limit. You get disconnected for breaking this limit, and for increasing periods of time with each violation, culminating in charges for reconnection. It's also horribly slow (60KB/s being the average, sometimes as low as 20KB/s).

The ISP is pathetically unprofessional and is actually just a small reseller renting a 64Mbps line from Telewest. This line is being shared between the several thousand students in university-owned accommodation at Birmingham. Their website is a joke and now appears to have been taken down (http://damovoconnect.com/). I have no idea why a body as large as a major university would've chosen to associate with them.

So yeah it's not great. There are rumours that they're getting the boot though.

Well on a 36mb/s line, download speeds will be at 4.5MB/s

So if a certain site is able to upload at that speed, a file of about 1.5GB should take roughly 5mins to download.

After which I disconnect the cable, as I think it's highly unlikely they'll detect it and investigate it within 5 minutes.

Then save it for another day - where another 1.5GB gets downloaded... and so on.
