Unknown debts from 12 years ago?

Sounds like the debt is probably statute barred and therefore no court action can be taken. Do not carry on speaking to them on the phone, do everything in writing. What you need to do is send the statute barred template letter which can be found on Money Saving Expert website.

I certainly wouldn't pay any debt that hasn't been acknowledged for over 10 years just to make them go away either.

Thats not correct. They can still be collected and you still owe the money, But they have no court path to claim. They can keep telling credit agencies about the default and can keep sending you letters. If you acknowledge a debt even after 25 yrs the clock restarts

Defaults drop off your credit file 6 years after they were entered. It would be against the rules for them re-enter it after that.

They can keep notifying EVERY month that the account remains in default. So yes after 6 years the oldest will drop off. the one you owe at 5 yrs 11 months , 5 yrs 10 month etc etc can still show.

Most lenders stop notifying after a time but they can still notify

From experience the default along with the credit account drops off your credit files 6 years from the date the default was added. They can keep reporting to the account every month on the current status of it, but once that default hits 6 years then the whole account is gone.

What you're saying is you get a new default every month which is not true.
