Unlocking 6950

Yeah that was correct, and yes thats the card i got. I can't boot off the card at all now, I've had to boot off onboard graphics. Can you post the defaults for position 1 and 2 so I can reflash (plus simple instructions how to reflash) with the defaults?

Thanks loads guys

How do I flash if I can't boot off the card? And what's the best way to do it? I'm a complete noob at this as I only got the card last week. Also if I attach the card to the PCIE I can boot off onboard graphics but as soon as I attach the Power supply to the card I can't boot

Can you go into your motherboard bios and set the onboard graphics to come on before the PCIE?

You should be able to.

this would then allow you to boot into a dos enviroment and use Atiflash to flash the bios back properly?

Also below is a link to the original instructions that MSI posted on their website!

http://www.vortez.net/articles_pages/msi_r6950_twin_froz_iii_power_edition_unlocking,1.html

You can see at the very bottom the instructions on how to use Atiflash!

Not sure as it's a HP bios off a standard HP machine. I'm at work tomorrow but I will try all of this tomorrow. Hopefully I can resurrect my card.

Any chance of explaining how to flash it? I have no idea what any of those instructions mean

The vortex link I posted above explains it a lot better than I ever could!

Also has links to download files to create a USB boot into a dos enviroment!

From there it is very simple!

C:CD:/YOUR FOLDER NAME

C: ATIFLASH -p -f 0 original.bin

reboot will appear, remove usb stick and boot into windows, remebering to switch back to the PCIE card first to display within your PC bios!

Code:
Then shut down, fllick the switch to number 2, and do the same as above except make sure you use

C:ATIFLASH -p -f 0 BIOS2.bin

Ignore this part until you get at least one bios working!

Thanks for your help. Will post results on tuesday

I just looked at the Vortez link you posted, but I can't see where it says how to create a bootable flash drive? does it just mean a stand alone USB version of Windows 7?

Update:

I tried everything you said and although I can get the USB to boot and ATIFlash to boot, tried to flash it and all I get is error 0FL01 and adapter not found.

I'm guessing I'll have to RMA it and get a replacement then leave it the hell alone lol.

Unless anybody lives close enough to Sheffield and is free before Friday (I'll pay you if you can fix it lol)

maybe you should have taken heed of everyone saying it wouldn unlock, if you wanted a unlockable 6950 then the sapphire toxic is the only option, but guess its too late now :)

Actually people have had success flashing the Frozr III Power Edition. No idea why it failed. If I get a replacement or get it fixed, even at cost, I'll be happy, worst case scenario, I learned an expensive lesson

There doesn't seem to have been much success recently. You shouldn't listen to those saying "go for it , what have you got to lose".

In your case the answer might be £200.

See this thread:

*** MSI 6950 Twin Frozr III Power Edition - How To Unlock The Power ***

Also you need to amend your signature.

Firstly you're only allowed to use 4 lines of text.

Secondly "MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III Power Edition" needs changing to "brick" :(

Jay

You might as well give it one more go with

atiflash -unlock 0

Then do the normal write to bios

atiflash -p -f 0 biosname.rom

But it is looking like a hardware hack for you to fix it yourself if the above doesn't work!

out of interest, why do people flash it? why not just over clock it like you would with any card?

Early cards could be unlocked to give them the same number of stream processors as a HD 6970.

Very little chance of that now except with the Sapphire TOXIC and even that's not guaranteed.
