Unlocking iPhone

Sorry, but the sticky makes no sense to me. Do I need to install iTunes before I even attempt to unlock the iPhone? I switched it on for the very first time, connected it to the PC, held down power and home until the screen went black and now I can't turn it back on again.

What am I supposed to be doing?

I'm holding home and plugging it into my PC. I keep holding home and then I get the message in iTunes about it being in recovery mode. It tells me that I need to restore before I can use iTunes. When I click OK, the update button is greyed out and it's saying my software is up to date.

What do I do now?

Right:

1) Switch it off, hold the button on the top for 3 seconds until the slider appears.

2) Hold down the home button and plug it into the computer still holding down the home button until a iTunes logo and cable appear on the screen.

3) iTunes will pop up and say that it has detected a phone in recovery mode, the only option to have it to Restore.

4) Wait for the restore to download and update the phone. The phone will go back to the activation screen.

5) Once thats done, quit iTunes and open ZiPhone and click 'Do-it-all'

6) Let it run and do it's thing.

Voila, job done, shove your existing SIM in there and your good to go.

:)

Mate don't use Ziphone. Use either Iliberty+ or Pwnage Tool, there both free and a less risky than Ziphone. Pwnage seems the way to go though as it is 100% reversible etc.

Pwnage is great, although the Windows version is rather lacking.. I had to send my custom ipsw to a friend so he could activate and unlock his in Windows. OSX version is excellent though.

But can't you use Pwnage still after you used ziphone?

Not sure if you mean you can't use it if you've used ziphone or if you mean you have to use ziphone first.. but you don't need to use anything other than Pwnage, even on a brand new phone.

1. Take phone out of the box.
2. Put it into recovery mode, connect to iTunes, restore to the latest firmware.
3. Back into recovery mode, quit iTunes, run pwnage and perform the initial pwn.
4. Pick your custom options for your pwnage ipsw.
5. Phone back in recovery, load iTunes, Option click restore, pick the pwnage file.
6. Done.. unlocked, activated, installer.app installed and ready to rock and roll.

No need to run any other apps at all.

Well, I've already ran ziphone.

What I am wondering or to be specific, worrying is that about the bootloader. I read something about v3.9 and v4.6 or something and benefits of having the newer one. Just wondering what does ziphone do with that in regards of the bootloader.

p.s. Justine's guide is good but the confusion comes in when he says ziphone and links to iLiberty. I actually thought he linked it to the wrong place and i googled Ziphone to find the download myself.

ZiPhone downgrades the bootloader to v3.9. Apparently it can cause issues with WiFi and other stuff but I've had no problems at all. Other than these apparent issues there Is nothing much different between the bootloaders.

I think you can use BootNeuter (part of pwnage) to restore the latest bootloader and do all the pwnage shenanigans if you've already used ZiPhone.

If you haven't already used ZiPhone then there's really no reason to that I can think of.

What is the step for that? and what are the benefits of the newer bootloader?

I don't have any issue with wifi so i am wondering if it is worth it.

There's some info here:

There's no particular advantage to either if everything is running fine, but if you have downgraded the bootloader you won't be able to claim on warranty if anything goes wrong. Some people reckon future firmwares will require a newer bootloader, but I very much doubt that.

What i can't figure out is how to put a zipped file into the phone from the desktop.

If you have used Ziphone then Pwnage as said can upgrade your bootloader which means apple won't know you have unlocked it etc. The other thing with ziphone is when you unlock and jailbreak it does it all at once which can cause issues, where as Iliberty+ & Pwnage do Jailbreak first then Unlock. If your Ziphoned phone is working though then you don't need to bother with Pwnage until firmware 2.0 comes out as at the moment that is the only tool that can crack 2.0 firmware.

If you go to Macrumours and look in the iphone hacked thread then there is a really good FAQ on Pwnage which should have all you need use the tool.
