**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

urrgh...just decided on the kwikfit MPS4S and they're out of 19" fronts! F1A5 it is then...
though tbh, either would be a world's difference compared to the OEM RFTs lol

Which would you guys go for out of this lot, I'm thinking more towards the Falkens as I've got them on my other two cars and they've been fantastic especially in the wet. Anyone used the others? I'm currently running the Michilens Latitude Sport 3's on the SRT8 (they came with the car) but are they really worth the money?

SIZE: 275/40/20Y front and 315/35/20Y rear.

Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 3 SUV K127A: Front = £130.35, Rear = £175.75 inc VAT (TOTAL = £612.20)
Falken Azensis FK510 SUV: Front = £152.10, Rear = £192.40 inc VAT (TOTAL = £689.00)
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 SUV: Front = £148.90, Rear = £219.45 inc VAT (TOTAL = £736.70)
Michelin Latitude Sport 3: Front = £170.05 inc VAT, Rear = £253.95 inc VAT (TOTAL = £848.00)

I put the non SUV version of the FK510 on my V70R and was very happy with them, I pushed them hard and the grip and predictability on offer was impressive, especially in the wet. I didn't have the car long enough to see how they wore though.

The F1A3 is a tried and tested tyre, everyone knows they are good, and I'm guessing they will last a fair bit longer than the Falkens - You might have a better idea of how long the Falkens last? But Goodyears generally wear very well.

I'd probably go with that option for just £45 more than the Falkens.

Not familiar with the Latitude Sport name and how they compare to a Pilot Sport. Is it effectively just called that instead Pilot Sport SUV? If so they might edge it over the F1A3, but for £112 more, nah.

Yeah I'm a fan of the Falken, but every pair I've had do not last as long as I'd hope and with this thing weighing 2.2 ton, that will only be worse so yeah even thoguh I facnied them for pure grip, you've made me think about mileage and you're right, they're not the best.

Right now, I'm edging for the F1A3's now... simply because no one ever has a problem with them and also, it's the only one of the big makes I've not owned... I've been a fan of Continental Sport Contacts and Falkens over the years... I've had Michies and Pirelli (which I think are overated, the Pzero was rubiish on my FN2 tbh)... so, cheers for your view, I'm thinking similar to yourself.

Some Pirelli tyres are definitely overrated. I had PZero Nero's once and I thought they were crap. Replaced them with Pilot Sport 3's and the difference was astounding quite honestly.

Apparently PZeros are better in warmer climates. We slate them in the UK but others praise them. There seems to be a few different variations as well. Some of the OEM ones have a different tread pattern.

I need a set of Yokohama AD08Rs though. They are getting harder to find :(

Ditchfinders are also better in warmer climates.

Its easy for a tyre to be competent on warm dry tarmac. Its cold tarmac, or wet or greasy tarmac that sets the good ones apart from the rest.

There are several variations with different tread patterns and compounds though yes, and I know some of them are good! But im talking specifically about the PZero Nero. I haven't tried any of the others, but I don't intend on either.

I got a 17 plate Mazda 6 last year and it looks like the original tyres (Michelin Pilot Sport 4) are nearing the end of their life. Just been reading some reviews and they're obviously a good tyre, but do I need such quality on what is definitely not a performance car?

I used to run Goodyear F1s on my 350Z, which I loved for their wet (and dry) performance but I used to run Avon ZX7 on the old Mazda 6.

I don't mind putting the Michelin's back on if I'm going to benefit from their overall performance.... while driving sedately :p

Size is 225/45/R19

Put on whatever you are comfortable with, ultimately it depends on the balance of price, perceived performance, and longevity.

Personally I'm totally happy on a good mid-range tyre like a Falken or a Kumho etc, and I don't hang about, but they are far from created equal so do some digging first. :)

I did have a list of mid-range tyres I've been impressed by and ones which I haven't, but it is likely quite outdated at this point.

For normal daily driving anything like the Avons, etc. will be fine - though personally I'm a fan of tyres with enhanced wet performance especially as we've had so much torrential rain over the last couple of years or so - the difference in driving in pouring rain is huge to the point I'm surprised it isn't more highly regulated - though not all tyres that perform in the wet are great for overall performance.

I've twice been in situations with my Turanzas, one where it caused vehicles in front of me to collide, where pretty much everyone else was struggling and I didn't even have the slightest issue with stopping distance or sliding, etc.

just re-checked kwik fit for the lolz and the 19 inch staggered MPS4S are back in stock...
...and cheaper than it was compared to last week!

now just £617 (£645 last week), which makes it just £15 dearer per corner in comparison to a set of F1A5 (£557)
all booked in and cancelled my F1A5 fitting lol

Your first line suggest any tyres are fine then you discuss the merits of tyres with higher performance in the rain. Surely normal driving in the rain is a perfect example of the benefits of paying a bit extra for better tyres ?

Yeah any crappy tyre can be solid in the dry, it's wet performance that's the counter here hence I want the best wet performance generally... or certainly up there. When I bought my original Saab years ago it came with a set of Ling Longs... wow... wtf... however in the dry, they were fine for daily driving... but in the wet, never ever seen anything like it they basically understeered every single roundabout to the point theyr'e dangerous. I'm asstinished that there isn't a minimum standard in this country as they are IMHO absolutely dangerous!

I know it seems a bit contradictory - but there are many mainstream tyres will give what is generally considered acceptable performance in the wet and you can't exactly fault them as such but when you drive on some of the better enhanced wet grip tyres and things get dicey and they just don't give up it makes you think.

Black circles Ends in 1 hour so ended up buying some new front tyres as mine are probably 2.5mm left and one keeps losing air which is annoying me.

£299 fitted for two PS4S 255/35/19. Expensive few weeks for my drive ornament, 4 tyres, VED and insurance.

Do all tyres come with the same amount of tread from the factory? My GTi with the Vredestein Quatrac Pros had 7mm each corner when I traded it in. Had covered maybes 1000 miles with them. The AMG I picked up recently has covered 2-300 miles. Yet the little service video I was sent shows the tread as ~6.3mm per corner. So I'm a bit confused as to why it is lower, with less miles covered.

No they do vary, but around 7mm is the norm.
