**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

Yup - even with north of 600bhp in the McLaren, there was rarely a loose moment at full throttle. Vs the PZeros that came off, night and day. The peak dry grip at optimal temperature for the compounds of the CSC7 vs MPSS (or PZero on the macca) isn't actually all that huge but that happens so rarely it doesn't matter. In 12-15c ambient temps, the amount of grip available is quite a lot higher.

The M2C is quite a bit less tame at the back despite being over 200bhp down on power, particularly during fast changes of direction and when crossing over the crown of a cambered road so a bit more discipline at the back is most welcome :)

Don’t get me started on PZeros :p (at least not in anything less than optimal conditions or the tiniest bit of wear)

SC7 here too, done about 2k on them now (including 5 days on the Isle of Man ;) ) and they have been very good, especially in the wet. Coming from the AS6, which I loved, I'd say they are a slight step up.

The Goodyear's have better rim protection if that is something you care about though.

i am getting really close to needing new tyres now (I posted the same thing 4 months ago, but these tyres just wont wear out !!!

formula one autocentre still looking really good with 4x Goodyear Eagle Sport AS 105V XL J Size: 245/50VR20 coming in at £690 fitted.

am almost tempted to get tyres now even tho i probably still have another few 1000 miles left on my tyres (though that goes against the notion of minimising waste)

quick question.

the tyres come with complementary wheel balancing however "precision balancing" is an optional extra at £3.25 per tyre.

is this something which will make a difference or is it just a way to fleece people with no idea what they are doing (aka me!)
thanks.

WTF is precision balancing? The wheel is either balanced or it’s not. Sounds like sly upselling.

exactly... that was why i asked!. unless they deliberately do a crap job for free.... and only do it properly if you pay :D

but i cant help but think of gold plated HDMI leads when i see this. I suppose conceptually they could use slightly more accurate equipment but i wonder how much difference a few grams will make.

At £13 for the car they may just think it is free money for old rope and most people will pay. not much per person but over the course of the week a nice little bonus.

however that £13 i can treat the mrs to a romantic doner kebab for 2 :D (joking aside, i will pay it if it makes a genuine difference, i have just never heard of it before)

Each tyre between 5.6 and 6mm.... tyres done 3k miles.
Hmmm, what do they start at? Conti 7
7.4mm according to what was posted previously
damn...those shoes arent gonna last your 440i more than 10k miles, and that's if you change them at the legal limit

Wow, that's a hefty loss of tread in such a short amount of time....
Mabey i should have gone for Pilot sports haha

my PS4S are due to be changed soon, and, seeing your results...i'm now confident my next set will be the AS6
i don't think i can stomach that wear rate...no matter how good the CSC7s are
at the top end, they're all marginal for routine road use and £/mile is an important metric for me

Not sure I'd pick the Goodyear over those, it isn't quite the same type of tyre. It's a good tyre (I recently fitted 4 to the Mini) but it's rival is the Pilot Sport 4 and 5, not the Pilot Sport 4S.

you're right.
my thinking is that the AS6 is a newer tyre than the PS4S and the performance is much closer than it was vs the AS5 which i previously considered
also the PS4S is about £140 more expensive for a set of BMW 19s nowadays (last ebay sale for the AS6 was £520 fitted, vs £660 fitted for the PS4S)

The Goodyear's are very good value at the moment, which is how I ended up with 4 when I was originally going to buy Pilot Sport 5.
absolutely.
was thinking of getting them a couple of weeks ago during the ebay sale but i've got about 1mm to scrub off the current ps4s before changing

I've been driving for the past week with some cheap-ass generic tyres on loaner wheels and as my wheel speed sensor is still broken (being changed tomorrow as have garage time booked) I was on edge at first thinking what if it loses traction or whatever but nope, absolutely fine in terms of grip and composure on the road, the only thing I noticed was the obvious drop in steering precision, it felt woolly on those tyres as there was no confidence with turning and feedback through the steering wheel whereas the feedback through the PS4S now that I have them back on is back to what I'm sued to and the steering precision is back too.

Was expecting to have to baby the throttle but didn't need to do that at all and just drive how I normally would, just with a little margin of caution.

Generally with cheap tyres it is when conditions are less than ideal you really start to notice it i.e. they'll start feeling sloppy as **** if temperatures get anywhere close to 7C let alone below, and/or nasty to drive in the wet i.e. on a rain drenched dual-carriageway you'd be puckering up passing a lorry hah.

The cheap tyres I had on one vehicle (as per when it was bought) were actually really grippy and you wouldn't lose traction, just no sophistication to it.
