**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

Crossposting from the BMW thread.

BMW Approved 8,000-mile 2024 BMW X5 I'm interested in has 4 different manufacture dates on the tyres, which is a bit odd, but 1 of them is a newer version of the Pirelli PZ4.
It's got 3x PZ4 *1 and one PZ4 II*

It looks like this, but on the front axle. The tread patterns (and I assume wear rates) are not the same. The dealer doesn't seem to bothered as they're all star-marked PZ4s, but I've never been a fan of non-matching tyres across an axle..

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Possible that one of the fronts had a puncture and a PZ4 II was all that was available.

(Different manufacturing dates again is neither here nor there - entirely possible that sone had been sat on a shelf or elsewhere in the supply chain)

This is exactly what I suspect happened, because the front right (with the PZ4 II) has some kerb damage, which they are fixing.
Ironically, the II doesn't have the rim protector...

The dealer looked at me like I was crazy when I suggested replacing the other so they match.. Thanks for your confirmation :)

xDrive can be really fussy with different tyres in my experience - it wouldn’t phase me on any other brand of car I’ve driven with AWD/4WD.

Fussy how? They’re both star-marked PZ4s so the dealer will claim they’re fine.
I want matching tyres but not keen to pay £250-500 for the privilege..

If you believe the BMW advice then they sound like an absolute diva, but I can't imagine there are 1000s of owners throwing away part worn tyres and replacing all 4 every time they get a puncture (or even when 2 are due replacement)

I'm not sure if it works out any different to the 2mm quoted above but BMW often quote xDrive on rolling circumference tolerance (1%) rather than tread depth difference for some reason, at least the performance variants of it. I don't know at what point it becomes significant but BMW definitely state that if there is too much difference in tread or rolling resistance, etc. it will impact the lifespan of transmission components. To an extent the transmission does have to deal with mixed conditions across the different wheels anyhow but these kind of systems can be fussy.

It just depends how similar they are.

I had 4x star marked PZ4s on my 320d xDrive F30 (so different gen car, which may not be applicable).

Puncture in one tyre, replaced with a different PZ4 (can’t remember which one) and had issues with accelerating and traction control flashing up.

Went back to the garage and had the tyre replaced with another star rated PZ4 and it was fine after.

Can anyone explain why, when I search for Conti SC7s on Blackcircles (235/35R19), I get two results come up which look identical but have different prices?

The only reason I can think of is the cheaper one might be older stock.

Also, the second link does not display the offer on purchase of 2/4 tyres.

Is one set manufacturer marked? Right now on BC I can see the same set of PS4S for my car listed twice. Once costs £10 LESS, but is BMW marked.

Not in this case as the Contis aren't an OEM option on my car.

I've ordered a set at my local tyre place anyway, will get them fitted later this week.

That my cash back processed and payment made.

2 Michelin pilot 5’s for the price of toyos I was quoted at one of the cheaper local’s :)

It's good, obviously for the same/less money it's a no brainer.

But I'm seriously considering toyo tyres next time, I hear good things and my step son has all 4 on his car and says they are fine.

My Volvo has some weird thing where the inside corner of the tyre wears down, so you need to replace the tyre when you've probably got 30% wear left on.

I've been running pilot sport 4s but it's getting expensive.

Yeah

I’ve had Toyo’s multiple times before. It’s what I would aim for if money was tight. Certainly noticed the grip difference between them and Continentals with the later being superior. Their price also seems have got a lot more closer to the likes of the big 3.

Hmmmm ok.

The last set I got was Bridgestone, I want to say turanza 6s, but they've been on the back wheels and it's a front wheel drive car so really cannot comment on the performance and they are not really doing any of the work.

I will rotate them when I get new ones so will see.

Now it was only the Toyo Touring ones I had and not the performance ones. Also kinda preferred Yokohama Blue earths over the Toyos.

Got my SC7s fitted all round. Decided not to keep the old front Goodyears, despite them having a good amount of tread left, as I just couldn't be arsed with the hassle of trying to flog them and having them clogging up space.

Checked the dates on the new tyres and they're all 2026, weeks 13/13/14/19. Fairly happy with that as I've seen some people commenting on getting tyres which have been sitting around for a while.

I'm annoyed with the local garage who performed the MOT on my car on Friday, which failed due to damage to the inside edge of the rear near side tyre.

They ordered the replacement in, saying a P Zero in that size isn't readily available for same day and it'll be delivered Monday. Not a problem, but I did clarify it was the Alfa Romeo OE version seeing as I have those on the other three wheels. He assured me it was.

Low and behold, I get a phone call saying it's a Mercedes version but not to worry, it's the same tyre. They have the ordered the AR version saying I wasn't accepting it considering I specifically asked for the AR version.

OE variants can use different compounds and arrangement/tension of the cords.

Had a nail in 1 of my tesla tyres.... 2 other ones advisory on my MOT...

Got 4 corners all changed + 4wd alignment + tyre warranty for near £1200 feels like murder. Went for Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 3 EV Sound Absorber (225/45/r19 for my tesla model Y)
