**Unofficial Tyre Thread**

The winter tyre circlejerk in this country is getting out of hand for that reason. We probably see a few days a year where winters are beneficial.

Diagro - this is why I kept saying to get the dealer to replace both tyres on the axle when you were proudly saying you convinced them to replace one tyre. Good quality summer tyres, matching on each axle is the best setup for driving in the UK all year round. If you absolutely must keep trying to make your car look like an MPS then put decent summer tyres on them and flog the winter rubbish on eBay - it's the perfect time of year to do that while everyone is panicking over the daily mail's headlines about snow

Got my Toyota garage to offer 4 Dunlop Blueresponse tyres for £250 all in. A bit more expensive than the cheapest online but I've used these guys for a while and they've always done a good job which is worth more to me than £20, especially after lurking on Russinating's thread

Ok Thanks for that.
Had a look online, i can sell the set on there for a decent wedge anyway, will pay 2/3 the cost of new Rainsports easy. (I'm a fan of the Rainsports)

Is it though? **** winter tyres are probably worse in damp non-wintry conditions than **** summer tyres :/

However, they'll still be better than summers in snow.

They list the exact make and model of every winter tyre they test, but the the summer tyre is just "summer tyre". Are we to assume they used one of Wanli/Linglong's finest as their "summer tyre"?

Indeed, wondered that myself..

As Fox has been saying for a while now, at best they compare against mid range tyres rather than High performance tyres like CSC5, F1A2 etc

See this is why the internet loves the Rainsport, same reason they went nuts for the Falkens a few years back - because they are cheap, not because they are necessarily that amazing.

Yup.
cheap and blooming good in the wet.
loved my set on the clio.
they just wear a little fast

I have honestly noticed zero increase in wet grip between these and either eagle F1's or conti's on cars I've tried them on - yet both of those are considerably better in the dry (if not the wet too).

Don't get me wrong they're fine, but they're priced appropriately imo. The likes of Hankook evo's are better all round tyres

The internet loved toyo proxies, "Eagle f1 gsd3 performance for 1/3 of the price!" So when no alternative was available I took a punt.

Worst Tyre I've ever used, I'm convinced no one who rates them has ever driven an equivalent car with good tyres on.

Well my CSC5s had a good workout on the M4 today in some very heavy rain, they sure can shift some water. Having also driven them on leafy/flooded roads and also dry roads, I must say that I am seriously impressed. I have never experienced tyres with such grip before. Glad the Pirellis are off, useless tyres.

Which one? The CF1 was a bit internet FOTM. The CF2 is a very different tread pattern and I don't think ever really gathered a following

I have CF2s. Ride's a bit hard but otherwise I wouldn't complain.

Same with the Falken 452, dire.

Now the Rainsport is the latest internet hero tyre, then you dig deeply and fine it's performance is middle of the road and it's stand out feature is... guess what, low price :D

452's as a dry tyre weren't dire at all, but put then against a decent make in the wet and I tend to agree. Ultimately priced appropriately

What's worse is people seem to buy the falken 912/913 on the back of the internet sensation that the 452 was and these truly are awful, awful tyres

As far as RainSport3s, what about sizes where F1AS2 or SportContacts aren't available.

For the MX5 on 195/50/15 its pretty much either RainSport3, PremiumContact5, Pilot Exalto 2 or PilotSport3.

I'm not entirely convinced there would be much performance difference if any between any of those offerings. Although I'm happy to be proved wrong and would happily spend more money next time.
