Interesting and informative read, its amazing how the 2900xt is actually out performing an ultra at some resolutions and the GTS just cant compete with it.:eek:

Also intriguing is the fact that the high end NVIDIA hardware seems to become CPU limited at less than 1600x1200. This leads to the fact that AMD's Radeon HD 2900 XT actually outperforms the 8800 Ultra at 1280x1024.

I take it you mean "excels" ;)

That is a really good showing for the 2900, never really seems to be 4-5fps behind the gtx and really gives the gts a kicking in some of those benchmarks. Wonder if perception of the 2900 would be as bad as it is had that demo showcasing a next gen engine had been available around launch time.

Mine's not working right then, drops to 40FPS on the outside part of Shangri, 3.2GHz C2D, 2900pro @ XT, 4GB RAM, 1280 x 1024, no AA/AF :\
 
Yeah the GTS is made to look a bit of a joke and the ultra an overpriced chump in UT3, lets hope its a driver issue eh.;)


Now if we can get some decent fps in crysis as in UT3, that would be well sweet, the 26th cant come soon enough.:D
 
I believe the way UT3 is coded lends itself well to the architecture of the 2900 anyway?

I'm sure I remember hearing on these very boards a few months back that in shader-heavy games like UT3, the 2900 would close the gap right up to the GTX.

[Edit] And lets not forget 2600XT in "outperforms 8600GTS" shocker! :o :p

Next gen tech and the hd2xxx series starts to show something good ;) what a surprise! Would be nice to see this trend continue with Crysis though :p

Lol, I did mean that. Teaches me for being up later than usual.

Looking at the results I think it's more a case of ATI's brute-force high clock-speed approach prevailing over NVidia's efficiency, rather than CPU limitation.
 
It would have been a more balanced review if they included AA on some of the tests. Most people who buy high-end graphics cards like to use AA, in the same way they like to set textures to max.

It seems a little bias towards ATI, but even the lowly 8800 GTS 320 gets >60fps at 1920x1200 so no real concerns for either side.
