Unrepresentative reviewing of OcUK on review sites

I've never had a problem with OcUK and I'll definitely write a positive review next time I buy something.

Got my current PC for a bargain price from the time when they were doing a 10% off your entire order. It was already cheaper than one of the biggest PC parts stores as I added the same (or near enough) items to both baskets and with the 10% off plus free delivery it was a very good price. Just need another offer like that in a year or so when I'm after a new rig :p.

Bought an X1900XTX from the MM ages ago, the fan died. Spoke with the guy who sold it to me, he'd got it from here, send them a webnote, got an RMA number, sent the card off, and after several weeks I got a new X1950XT replacement. Took ages because they had to send it off to the manufacturer or something, though.

Still, this must have been 3-4 years ago, so I was pleased with that :)

Er - no. If only negative transactions are rated then the rating will depend mostly on volume of sales. There will always be problems. Let's say I mess up one transaction in a thousand. If I ship 50k orders and only the mistakes etc are rated, then I'll get fifty bad reviews. If Joe Bloggs makes a mess of one transaction in a hundred, but only ships a thousand orders, he's got ten bits of bad feedback to my fifty. You can only make a valid comparison of companies shipping a similar number of orders: information that is generally pretty hard to get accurately.

If they only reviews you and joe bloggs got were 1 star then you'd both have the same rating... It doesn't matter how many negative reviews you had. If your only review was negative then you'd have a negative overall rating.

Reality is a bit different though - there are clearly good reviews on these sites too. A review is inaccurate if perhaps there are few responses but if you've got a few hundred responses for one site and a few hundred responses for another and one site is doing significantly better than another then you do have to question why there are so many negative vs positive reviews... despite what the fanboys think it might be because there is a difference in customer service.

I don't personally care tbh.. I shop where I can get stuff cheap & efficiently - OcUK fulfills that criteria quite frequently for me just as Ryan air does if I want a weekend away.

I remember doing some marketing course at work a few years back. If you have good experience then your likely to tell 1 person, if you have a bad experience your likely to tell 9. Sometimes because the community is so close knit, it's kinda hard to get the good news out.

My experience shopping with OcUK has been fault free and I personally can't ask for more than that.

can't say i have had any serious problems from here just a few minor ones that were sorted out pretty fast eg a monitor with out a dvi cable and a euro power plug and all it took was me to say the problem in the forum customer bit and ocuk sent out the missing cables which i received a day or 2 later :)

there was another time i orderedd a graphics card and it turned out to be not in stock which was fair enough but it would be nice if i got a call or email telling me that instead of phoning up to find out why it had not arrived and they answered the phone quickly unlike what a load of they negative reviews are saying.

all in all i can't fault ocuk as the service i have received has been spot on multiple times with small orders and large ones like 2 loads of parts for my old 939 rig and dads one in the same order and every thing arrived well packaged and had no faults etc :)

all in all any small niggles i have with ocuk are far out weighed by the massive positive experiences i have encountered and the free shipping is the icing on the cake please never stop that :D

the parts in my current rig all arrived with no problems (apart from my monitor cables which was quickly resolved) as well and the same with dads new one i ordered for him recently which is similar spec :)

I understand people have long memories but most of the negative comments in this thread relate to matters years ago.

The issue for most people is that they buy parts so infrequently that even though its years ago it may only be the last time they bought stuff.

There are also others like me that have had lots of bad luck with orders, it is impossible to run a perfect business afterall.

I've been a customer for nearly 10 years and never really had any major problems, you can't blame people for wanting to express their frustrations elsewhere though when any remotely negative feedback here is censored with an iron fist.

The law doesn't care how petty the issue is, if the lawyers can make some money. And therein lies the problem: suing for libel is enormously expensive, and the outcome is little more than a gamble (go ask Simon Singh). Even if you win, unless you get fees paid - which is not guaranteed - you will be bankrupt. There have been cases of people being awarded 1p in damages. This is why such cases are nearly always settled out of court: no one wants to take the risk of getting on the wrong on of the lawyers' bill, which will be in six figures or more.

Interesting. Thanks :)

I think that is a factor. I thought twice about starting this thread because I was considering the possibility of being suspended or banned for mentioning that OcUK has a bad score at reviewing websites.

yep that is true there has been countless times i have recomended ocuk when a fellow gamer is looking to upgrade his comp and all i hear back is that ocuk sucks etc from what they have heard or had a dodgy order in the past that has tainted their opinion of the site.

all i can tell them is i have ordered full comps in parts and not had problems etc and to give ocuk another shot :)

same with any site tbh there are always going to be verbal people with a bad experience plus as has been mentioned people seem to react very badly to getting banned from the forums and start mouthing off on other sites as they cant do it here.

my freind had a kinda bad experience but it has not tainted his opinion much as it was him that introduced me to the site he rma'd a case becuase it wasnt right and he got sent back one with missing screws etc so the replacement was obvously used and it took weeks to resolve.

i wont be going on sites posting good or bad reviews but i will defend the site when people say unfounded things about it as my experience has been good.

i have never had to rma any thing before so i cant comment on how ocuk handles rma's :)
