I'm going to the Olympics next summer but obviously hotels etc are sooooo expensive! We are looking further west than most of the events,

Barra de Guaratiba In the west zone.

I can't find anything much about it, just that it's an up and coming area, new travel links are going in but it's still a mission away from the main events. Roughly 3 hours! :( but we have a friend that will be competing so don't want to miss that!

We will be in Rio for just the final week of events. Does anyone know if Barra de Guaratiba is fairly safe?

Wasn't Adrian Chiles shot at in the commentary box in Rio at the world cup?

You really can't judge the reception that Adrian Chiles gets in a country as being representative of the place as a whole. If I had a stone and Adrian Chiles was nearby it would probably be leaving my hand at a fair speed before I even knew what I was doing.

This really,

Do a google earth street view of where you are planning to stay.

I did this when my Niece went to Rio as part of her language degree a couple of years ago and I wanted to know where she was going to stay (It was actually OK. You know, no bordered up shops, no burned out cars, No dead bodies lying in the street, etc) In the interweb age you can actually check these things before hand you know! :D

I'm living out in Rio just now, staying in Leblon. To be honest, the entire place has an air of danger and it's important to constantly be aware of that, so take some time to read up on how to blend in and try not to look too much like a rich foreigner.

I don't know much about Barra de Guaratiba but I'll ask some people at work tomorrow and get back to you. Most places are fine, you just need to be sensible about not waving your phone/camera about, not going off the beaten track etc.
