Just recieved a call from someone saying they are from Core Media Concepts thanking me for the Sponsership to my local nominated school, and that I would be receiving a copy of the book with my business ad, and that the fee would be £189. What business, what ad????

What to do as it sounds like a scam? They have my correct contact details as well which is strange  I am concerned they will class it as an official debt and then try to chase me for it via baliffs when it gets to that level etc.

Tell them you only process invoices that have been raised with a matching purchase order number supplied by your company. As they don't have a purchase order number it can't be an official invoice and you won't be paying it.

Probably also worth getting in touch with the school in question and seeing if they've heard anything about it. This has a scam written all over it, hoping you'll think "oh its for the school we might as well go for it anyway".

PK!

Good thinking, will this have a legal standing do you think? :) As far as I know, companies just sell the debt to baliffs, who then chase it regardless of the reasons adding their own costs on top.

iirc it's a common scam, they won't have a signed order for it (so it's unenforceable, especially as they'll probably already have a list of complaints against them with trading standards;)), however you will probably want to let everyone who might be authorised to pay for things to know that they are not to pay it, as from what i've heard these companies will keep ringing until they get someone who isn't aware it's a scam and gets worried enough to pay.

Plus report them to Trading Standards as the more complaints they get the more they might actually do something.

Surely if you receive a call from someone about this kind of thing, the best thing to do would be to ASK THEM???

I don't see the logic in asking an Internet forum, who of course can't possibly know all the details.

Offer our views on this incident as some of us will hopefully have had this happen to us before and therefore we may have a little more experience with this sort of stuff that the OP........

Well if someone phoned me about a non-existent debt I'd sort it out there and then, rather than posting on a forum. Maybe that's just me though.

Also if someone is claiming a debt from you that you are 100% sure doesn't exist, then by deduction it must be a scam, no?

Yeah it's a scam, Shoseki made a thread about this a few days ago explaining how they do it:
