Unusual Error - Windows Loading Loops!

This is a new one for me, something I've never encounted before.

When I switch on the PC, it seemingly loads everything and then once the Windows XP loading bar has finished, it then restarts itself and proceeds to go through the whole operation once more. This has only begun this weekend after shutting down perfectly fine on a few days back. I suspect it may be the HDD, or at least I hope so.

I've recently upgraded the CPU, Mobo, RAM and PSU - skipping on the HDD which is still an IDE, the original one which puts it at 5 years old. All of the new hardware was installed without error and it's all been working smoothly. I have had my suspicions about the HDD for sometime after a temperature reading put it at ... 220degrees Celcius! :eek:Thankfully, the family photos have been backed up.

Can anyone shed some light?

If it's boot looping (which, from your description, that's exactly what it sounds like), then it's almost certainly giving you a BSOD error then restarting. Press F8 during startup to access the selective startup menu, then select Disable automatic restart on system error, then see if it displays an error message when it crashes out again.

Hmm. F8 launches me into the screen when I can select various types of Safe Boot, Last Known Good Configuration [which doesn't work] and Boot Windows Normally.

I haven't had a BSOD yet, it simply loops after the Windows Loading Bar...

Yeah but usually when it's boot looping it flashes up a BSOD but can be so fast you don't even notice it.

Hmm. I've gone through BIOS and there is nothing of the sort to disable automatic restart.

No.. it's not an option in the BIOS. If you're running XP SP2 then pressing F8 will give you the usual Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, etc etc, but also Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure option. Select that.

its in windows itself, you need to boot into safe mode then goto control panel>system>advanced>startup & recovery>settings>disable auto restart.

edit, at least i thought it was in windows...

This is the list of options you should have (note, I'm pretty sure Disable restart was only added with service pack 2):

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last Known Good Configuration
Directory Services Restore Mode
Debugging Mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure

Bingo. The option appeared this time after disabling something within BIOS.

This was the BSOD error that has been returned to me:

Stop: C0000221 {Bad Image Checksum}
The image lz32.dll is possibly corrupt. The header checksum dos not match the computed checksum.

try repairing windows with the cd

insert cd, boot from it, select install then when it asks you if you want to repair the os then select yes, this will replace all windows files and should replace the lz32.dll file which is required to operate.

Hope this helps.

No, I haven't re-installed Windows since the hardware changes which..in retrospect has been a foolish thing to do. Especially since it's been practically replaced in terms of hardware.

That's exactly what I would do then. There's just no way you're going to have a stable system without reinstalling Windows when all the major parts of the system have changed.
I wouldn't worry about the hard drive too much - that's definitely a bad temp reading! :)
