Update to iPhone carrier settings?

So o2/Apple have iTunes cheerily show that download prompt, which in fact hoses your data settings. The user then has to notice that their internet isn't working, then connect the dots to some fairly technical fiddling that they had to perform months earlier.

Chalk up another one for It Just Works.

Lucky for me I just got this update a week after I got my iPhone so changing data settings was easy as pie.

For O2 PAYG guys:

Just go into Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Settings >

Then change APN to payandgo.o2.co.uk on the areas that you need or use.
Now your good to go. ;)

Was offered this update on Wednesday morning, messed up my Cellular Data Network Settings!

I updated and didn't realise until I was away from home (and my wifi connection) that it resets your network settings, so if you're on pay as you go you have to change them back again :(

Working again now though :)

edit: seems a few people already pointed it out already - was pretty annoyed as our home network went down the following night though I was able to use our libraries wifi to set the iphone up again :)

Seems pretty dumb to me, I see customers with this problem occasionally at work, one yesterday came in because of this problem, I guess its really hard to make the iTunes software detect what type of contract your on and then adjust the settings appropriately because there are so many variations around the world.

But they can decide what text is displayed in the iTunes dialog. Which should have told the user to verify (and correct) the settings changed by the update.

Total amateur stuff from Apple. Silently knocking out peoples' data service is serious business.

Good old O2! I just got a txt from them saying that Apple has released an important update which will help manage data roaming abroad.

I'm guessing that is what's contained in the new carrier settings update.

So are people who are using O2 installing this update or not.

O2 tell us one thing on their website by manually changing the cellular data settings and then send you a text message telling us that Apple have released an update and we must install it....

??

Yeah I got this too, checked their website and it mentions:

2 - To stop high bills when you're abroad

This update to your 'Carrier' settings will make sure you don't leave your 'Data Roaming' on by accident.

I didn't bother installing this update, now it keeps popping up every time I plug my iPhone into my PC. Probably should just update it and change the settings back.

Sorry guys I was under the impression that once you changed the settings manually the next time you plugged it back into iTunes it asked you to re-apply the update.

It doesnt, my bad!!!!!!
