If you want to watch anything on it you need the codecs anyway, so you need a HD or Memory card to hold them.

Yup he definitely needs some way of saving an xbox live profile, as it will not let you play movies/music over a network unless you are signed into live (needs the codecs)

So your out of luck you need a HDD or Memory card.

the media centre server is the thing that needs the codecs, not the xbox. The xbox will indirectly use the codecs that are installed on the PC to get the media to run.

Not if he's not connected to live it won't, which needs a profile to use

But then I could be wrong I'm going by what my mate has to do with his.

Another thought - is there a way of hard wiring a hdd to the xbox internally - its the basic one without a hdd, I have a few hdds spare - can I hardwire one in or adapt a cable to be plugged into where the memory card is connected?

No you can save game saves to it and small arcade games.

I can't believe how long this thread is over a simple matter like this, lol, you need some sort of Xbox compaitable memory device in the form of a HDD or MemoryCard.

It's as simple as that.

I do have a spare 20Gb HDD knocking around I was considering getting rid of hmmmm ....

No you cant...it will not work....needs to be an official M$ mem card or the M$ hdd.

Go to local video game store and buy a memory card.

The whole point of buying the xbox was a cheap media extender - with the price of the console, then a psu, then an av cable, now add a memory card/hdd - the aim is to try and use what I have,

It is easy to go out and buy the bits, I could go and get a whole new one, but thats no fun is it?

It would be a lot more fun having everything you need in one package instead of buying each part on its own.... or buy something like popcorn hour instead of an xbox for a streaming device?
