Hey chaps my build is 9yrs old now showing it’s age coming from Overclockers. With around £700 budget but could be flexible, what would you recommend I could do to bring it more up to date? Gaming at ultra wide 1440p aiming for ultra settings at min 120fps. Setup is below:

Gigabyte G1 Sniper Z87 Motherboard
Intel 4770k Quad Core @4.3ghz oc
Team group Vulcan Red 2133mhz ddr3 16gb
Samsung Evo 840 250gb ssd
Sea gate 2tb 7200 hd
NZXT Phantom Enthusiast Case
Super flower 750w psu
Gigabyte Gaming OC RTX3080 10GB

Kind regards,

Arth

Ooh sorry forgot to say the cooler I have is huge - I think it’s an Alpenfohn or something it’s massive!! Thank you for the current replies. I do Lightroom editing too so will definitely want 32gb ram.

Would I better sticking with this cooler or adopting a water cooling option? Many thanks

Can you get the model number? We'd need to check: the highest CPU/wattage supported by the cooler and if you can buy a bracket for AM5 or 1700.
Unsure of model number without pulling it out of the machine, but I went back through old emails and Overclockers mentioned it’s the ‘K2 Mount Doom’

Ooh that one looks very good. I’ll probably aim for that then! Is the above Intel build the best for the budget? I can up the budget to £800 I think actually. Thank you so much for the help

+ Is the 13700f able to overclock or would I need k or kf? What sort of oc would I expect or is it simply not as much of a big deal now?

You'd have to change the motherboard to a Z690 or Z790 board and buy a K or KF CPU. With a B board and non-K, all you can do is increase the power limits, but I would recommend leaving them enabled.

You could consider switching to DDR5, but I'd just get the 2TB P5P instead.

Intel Core i7-13700F (Raptor Lake) Socket LGA1700 Processor - Retail - £359.99
Gigabyte B760 GAMING X AX (LGA 1700) DDR5 ATX Motherboard - £199.99
Corsair Vengeance 32GB (2X16GB) DDR5 PC5-44800C36 5600MHz Dual Channel Kit - Black (CMK32GX5M2B5600C36) - £128.99

Crucial P5P 1TB M.2 2280 PCI-e 4.0 x4 3D NAND NVMe Solid State Drive - £89.99

Grand Total: £786.95 (includes delivery charge, £7.99)
Thank you so much this looks pretty perfect to me! Been researching more now, how does the Crucial compare to say, Seagate Firecuda 530, would I be better off with something like that? Or is the difference going to be unnoticeable for the cost?

Also, why the Gigabyte board? How does this compare to the other boards like MSI Tomahawk or whatever the DS3H or Gaming X ‘M’ versions are? Although I’ve always had Gigabyte gpu’s with no issues so more than happy to go for that!

I think I’d be quite happy with the F variant of the 13700, it looks like it would happily clock up to 5.2ghz which sounds plenty to me, as you’ve said unless I’m water cooling or going for a 13900k, it seems ideal.

Would the system be more future proofed with ddr5 and would I notice any performance improvements?

Thank you so much again and I think I’ll aim for that Thermalright cooler mentioned above too.

Arth

Thank you, I’m thinking of either Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE at the moment, DH-15 looks great but 3x the price!

the k2 mount doom is a very good cooler...it'll be a shame if OP had to change it just because it lacks the mounting for S1700/AM5
Yes I remember OCUK recommending it as it was the best air cooler you could buy at the time. I’m trying to find comparisons to the others mentioned but it seems as though Alpenfohn has been forgotten about! One of the things I don’t like is you cannot access the ram whatsoever once it’s installed. Which is also forcing me to ensure for the upgrade I’ll likely need low/normal profile ram design probably even if I change to one of the other coolers.

Guys, just to add to everything discussed here (and I GREATLY appreciate the discussion and brilliant advice thank you so much!), if lets say I were to sell my current setup and start completely from scratch, I would likely hold onto my RTX 3080 for another year or so. Everything else would be new. Could you recommend a brand new build including everything other than the OS? I think I would consider something like the following:

13900k/ks
Water cooling - Corsair?
Seagate Firecuda 530 2TB x2 / 4TB
HX1000i or similar PSU?
Corsair DDR5 5600mhz ram - apparently 13 gen intel doesn't benefit from any higher ram speed than this?
Using my RTX 3080 gpu
Corsair 5000 case?

Budget would be £1700 - 2000 max

I think I'm leaning more towards Intel but open to the AMD suggestions too. I have no idea if this would really be worth it, but I'm thinking of selling some stuff and I'm curious. What would you do? if I did start from scratch, what would be a nice easy case to work in? I would LOVE to have something with a window as the Phantom never did and I can't find an option anywhere to buy one.

And just to reiterate, main pc use purpose is gaming at 3440x1440p res on Alienware 34" monitor, I'd ideally like to get 120fps at Ultra or High settings. And regular Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop work.

Thanks again!

Thank you Tamzzy!! this looks rather tasty.. what sort of overclock could I expect to get on this (if it's even worth doing it thesedays!). Also for mounting the cooler, would this ideally go on the top? how easy is it? also would I need anymore fans anywhere and lastly how hard is it to control them? on my project pc, I've got x2 120mm's plugged into a splitter into the 4pin of the mboard and I can't control them even through the bios. It's good to know if I got stuck with the build I can jump on here and get advice though, thank you once again.

Mmm. I'm finalising funds before I leap for one of the builds. I'm tempted to swap the 3080 for a 4070 but it looks like there really isn't much point other than the lower power benefits and potential better future support. Would it be worth it to push extra frames with frame generation DLSS3? I don't know enough about them really. I really need to focus on the new build anyway and look at gpu stuff later to be honest regardless.

TPU seemed to like the dual, don't know about t'other one:

"ASUS has engineered a great little card with the "Dual." With three slots it's thicker than other cards, but shorter at the same time, which will be useful for many cases. Multi-GPU is dead, so a triple-slot card will be easy to fit anyway. Temperatures are super low on the ASUS Dual, 61°C is the lowest temperature we've seen today. Noise levels are still good, just 31 dBA is a little bit quieter than the Founders Edition, the MSI Ventus is still quieter. ASUS is the only vendor to implement a dual BIOS on their MSRP card, offering you a "quiet" BIOS option. Once that is enabled, noise levels drop to only 25.2 dBA, which is whisper-quiet. It's amazing how a card that runs 1440p and 4K, with ray tracing can be so quiet. If you stand right next to it, in a quiet room, with everything turned off, you can barely hear it. Our apples-to-apples cooler test reveals that the ASUS Dual is a good cooler, despite its fairly simple design. Only the MSI Ventus thermal solution is a tiny bit more powerful."

Mmm. Unsure. Always had the Gigabyte cards. Need more info!

Sorry  So basically I was originally looking to upgrade my current machine as I have current pc and also a project pc. I’ve since found out different family members are happy to buy both off me, hence I think I’m shifting more now to let’s start from scratch… the £1700 budget you guys linked was fine, but the 4070 release has confused me as the prices are not far off the price of my rtx3080 second hand, that’s what’s got me thinking about selling that now also. Time moves on so quick and I was an idiot buying that gpu during lockdown if I’m honest.

I’m happy with my monitor so yes Ill stay gaming at 1440p, just debating the gpu situation as a separate issue really but I think I’m the next week or two I’ll get all the other components listed if that is still the best for that price point.

I’m still not completely discounting the £800 budget build either, but it’s mighty tempting to start from scratch now, particularly as it’s been 9 years since I had a new machine!!

13900k build
(unfortunately a lot of parts are on pre-order)
i don't know how much RAM you will use in PS/LR - if you're semi-professional and deal with large file sizes then 64gb of 5600mhz RAM is preferred over 32gb of 6000mhz RAM
you will need a 360mm aio to cool the beast especially if you're going to load the 13900k flat out - arctic liquid freezer 2 is one of the best performing aios around
might as well get a newer ATX3/PCIE5 PSU as your next gpu purchase will likely use this connector

at the moment, intel 13900k is ~10% faster than ryzen 7950x with PS/LR
however, depending on how likely you are to upgrade, ryzen am5 provides a better CPU upgrade path and later gen ryzens may prove faster than the 13900k
the 13900k is likely the best you're going to get on the z790 platform and an upgrade will mean a full cpu/mobo swap out (rumours of a raptor lake refresh but these are just rumours for now, so large grain of salt needed)

My basket at OcUK:

Total: £1,731.86 (includes delivery: £11.98)

Hi Tamzzy, Tetras and everyone that has advised me on this thread (and also put up with all my chaotic questions!). I think I am going to proceed with the above build combined with an RTX 4070ti and swapping the ssd to a Firecuda 530 4TB (for more space for games and photography storage). After much research I even considered a 4090 and realised that a 4070ti is going to still give me about 160fps or higher ultra quality at the res I play at (3440x1440p), and that will be my target frame rate as I'm hoping to upgrade my screen to the Alienware OLED AW3423dwf in near future also which runs at 165hz refresh rate. I imagine I will keep this build for at least the next 5 years, probably only swapping out the gpu once or twice.

I'm unsure of wait times on some of the bits: psu, mboard, aio cooler but I think a few weeks wait will be worth it..

Are there any other tweaks you'd suggest to this build?

Thank you so much!

@tamzzy - I've picked up some items for the build - is the Fury Beast kit still recommended? only I noticed there's a 6000mhz variant they manufacture also. Would there be any difference in conjunction with the msi motherboard? - I'm also thinking I might just pickup the Samsung 990 Pro 2tb drive now that the firmware seems to have fixed the degredation issues. Is there anything else you'd tweak with this build? Thank you! Also @Tetras thanks for your help!

Budget went out the window as I sold some old stuff - already picked up the psu and cooler - so I've got 2.7k left to spend on the remaining bits!! Think I'll stick with 13900k/mboard/Phanteks G500 case/PSU/Cooler. So it's just which ram, ssd and gpu to pick now.

I found it on the QVL, I think ( KF556C40BBK2-64 ) so it seems like a good option.

How much extra?
Ah ok, I’m just wondering if it’s worth going for a lower latency kit and higher mhz if there’s any benefit or do you think it’s pointless? I’m just a bit miffed why they make all these different ram speeds when half the time the prices are all very similar. Price I believe is the same.

what make/model exactly have you bought?
@tamzzy Getting the Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360 A-RGB as recommended. And the Bequiet Pure Power 1000w 12m atx 3.0 pcie5. Is there anything better now?

I think I’ll stick with the Kingston Fury Beast 64gb kit as recommended, just need to finalise which variant etc. I looked at G Skill Z5 which I know OC doesn’t sell but I imagine is overkill/negligible anyway. Plus I’m assuming the extra £100 is better spent on getting the 13900ks or something if I was going to do that?

I think for the ssd I’m torn between 990 pro or WD SN850X. I’m tempted to go for the P5P as recommended which I might slot in at a later date but it looks like the other two might be that tad quicker for boot drive. I always wanted a 4TB really, but perhaps might start with just the 2tb and add others later I’m thinking.

What do you guys think?

And again, thanks for ALL the advice, it’s been indispensable and important as this is the first upgrade in over 9 years! I want to get it right!

Oh yes they'll definitely be rgb! :) - out of curiosity, if I went for something like G Skill Z6 6400 with the lower latency timings, would I notice any performance difference then or if I tried to overclock the system? would it be right to say that if I don't overclock, then the 13900k is more than happy with the 5600 memory speed and wont utilise anything higher really? I've decided to go for 2x 2tb 990 pro's by the way.
