Hi All,

So I wish to upgrade my severely outdated build. Currently I think I will need to upgrade the GPU and Power Supply, this is to be used for some moderate gaming so nothing too heavy.

My current build is my signature, but pasted below:

Corsair Graphite Series 230T | i5 4670K @ 4.3GHz
MSI Z87-G43 Gaming Series | Sapphire AMD R9 290 Tri-X 4906MB
TeamGroup Vulcan Gold 2x4GB 2133MHz | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB
Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD | Samsung 840 EVO 256GB

I am currently thinking of upgrading to the following:

GPU:

OR

Power Supply:

Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a reason you want to change your current power supply?

What resolution and refresh rate are you playing at?

The RX590 and the 5700XT are in totally different worlds both budget and performance-wise, you can get an RX590 for £150, although I wouldn't recommend upgrading to one from a 290. The 5700 and 5700XT are substantially more powerful cards.

Here's a couple of PSU suggestions:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £160.98 (includes shipping: £0.00)

I would personally lean towards the Ultra Snow as it comes with a 12 year warranty and is fully modular, as well as being a higher end unit in general compared to the other option. It's a better unit than the Corsair supply you're considering also, but honestly you could happily get away with the Core Gold (although it isn't modular) and it'd do just fine with your rig.

As for graphics cards, the 5700XT is a solid card but earlier revisions of the MSI Mech version had problems with the heatsink which caused performance problems. MSI have since claimed newer revisions have been fixed, but whether the version you get from OCUK is one of those 'fixed' versions is up in the air unless they can verify for you. You could also consider the following:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £674.99 (includes shipping: £0.00)

The Gigabyte 5700XT is a little more expensive but comes with a longer UK based warranty, there's also a UK representative of Gigabyte active on this forum. However, given the rest of your rig the sweet spot here may be the 5700 non XT, unless you plan on upgrading the rest of your rig not so long after. Of course much of this depends on the resolution and refresh rate you play at, I would hang fire until others can chip in regarding that.

8GB System RAM, and only 4c/4t is what will kill you in modern games TBH.

If you say you are not a heavy gamer, then why not just keep what you have and turn the settings down? The 290X is a great card, and similar to an RX580 4GB, so going for an RX590 is only a small upgrade, but the rest of the system will impose massive restrictions on how far any other faster card can stretch its legs. If you plan on replacing the rest of the system soon, the getting new graphics card makes sense, but if not, you be better off selling it whole, and starting fresh. :)

Bump - just to see if there’s any new advice.

currently thinking a GTX 2060 Super may give me 2/3 years at least.

Edit - Needs have also changed. Wish to make the complete switch to Pc Gaming.

s
o after a little bit of looking around decided this may be an ideal build. Just need some input on viability?

Why do you need to upgrade ?

You said moderate gaming ( what resolourion and refresh rate )are you struggling to hit frame rates,

Games you want to play ?

I just want to upgrade for upcoming games. So my monitor at the minute is a 144Hz Iiyama ProLite GB2488HSU.

Wanting to game at max FPS On games like COD, Escape from Tarkov, Assassins Creed Valhalla etc.

In all honesty pre-built is better for me as I simply don’t have the time to build myself. Plus, I’m entirely a liability at anything that requires a careful touch.

Ok if you go with the build above change the ssd to 1tb
And may be up the ram to 32gb, 16gb is enough but it just some what future proofs you.

The only thing that worry me about pre builds is the power supply , you could request that the change the psu to maybe Phantecs 650w gold modular.

It Wili cost more but Is a solid unit.

This another good option just need to change the options to
3700x
5700xt
1tb ssd
And change the psu to a quality unit.
Add a cpu cooler like the arctic e34 sport.

This is another option

The second build you posted has a 6 core 12 thread intel cpu. 10600k which is out of stock.

If you prefer that then there are a few changes you could make, the Asus tuf motherboard has wifi so you don't need the wifi card.

Psu change to a better option but there's a lot out of stock.

You can always call overclockers ask them to

In your second link you've changed psu to an out of stock, and changed the motherboard and m2 ot a 500gb sn 550 1tb is better .

You won't need thermal paste

MSI GEFORCE RTX 2070 SUPER VENTUS GP OC 8192MB PCI-EXPRESS GRAPHICS CARD will save you £50.

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...92mb-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-368-ms.html

ARCTIC FREEZER 34 ESPORTS 120MM CPU COOLER - BLACK / GREY looks better

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/arctic-freezer-34-esports-120mm-cpu-cooler-black-grey-hs

msi mpg z490 gaming edge wifi £220

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...-lga-1200-ddr4-atx-motherboard-mb-34v-ms.html

You could save more if at it you go for w b450 motherboard .

I suppose another question I have is the benefit of the 10th Gen 5 compared to the 9th Gen? I suppose it’s worth mentioning I will also be using the system for University work (essays, spreadsheets, presentations, research and all that lark).
