I was thinking about selling my 256mb PNY 8800gt and spending a little extra on another used card, this time a 512mb 8800gt. Would this pose a noticeable performance increase? thanks.

I would recommend saving your pennies and going for a card like a GTX 260 216.
Of which he doesn't have the PSU or the CPU to drive properly, good advice

Yes good point wasn't looking at his specs when I gave that advice. So he'll have to save a LOT of pennies.

I was tempted to save for a GTX260. I will be upgrading the PSU soon (shame, it's a great PSU, 5 amps short) as I'm trying to silence my PC.
You dont have the CPU power to run a 260GTX
Heck i bet your 8800GT is CPU bottlenecked in some instances.
Sell your 8800 and get yourself a 4770.

Agree with the 4770 comments will be more than fast enough for your resolution and a good improvement over your 8800gt.
