Upgrade advice on 8800gt 256mb

It's not worth it to be honest, you'd be much better off saving your pennies and investing in something that's going to give you a decent performance increase.

Hmm. Problem is, the PC I built for my brother is almost identical, and even at 1440x900 (as opposed to 1024x768 on my scratched 15" tft :() it seems to have a lot higher performance on games like Gmod and L4D. Only different parts in his are the PSU (570w Hiper) and Gfx (PNY 9800GT 512mb).

You will see a big difference and depending on how VRAM heavy a game is the difference will be even bigger. Most games these days need 512mb and your 256mb card would be swaping textures into memory left, right and centre.

A 9600GT with 512mb would prolly beat your 256mb 8800GT in the right games :)

Of which he doesn't have the PSU or the CPU to drive properly, good advice

4770 would show a decent boost over a 256mb GT, as even the extra memory would make a big difference these days, as the days of 256mb cards are long gone.

The 4770 is also faster than the 4830.
