Let's say £500
CS2 when released

Hmm, I don't know what the system requirements of this game will be, or if it prefers AMD/intel/nvidia, so it is kind of hard to judge what the best upgrade option is.

If the game is CPU limited, then 5800X3D.
If the game is GPU limited, then 7800 XT.
If it is both, then 5700X and 6700/7700 XT.

for CS2, if it were my £500, i'd get:
5700x (used)
2x 16gb...so 32gb ram (used)
radeon 6800 (used)

this should put you at or above the recommended requirements

Ryzen 7600 and rtx 4060 would be the modern equivalent
Thank you
When I say equivalent, I mean, they were the best performance options for the price at the time.
Is that the same currently with the 7600 or would that be the 5700x you also suggested?

you'd need a full platform upgrade for the 7600.
for your specific case, sticking with AM4 makes more financial sense given your limited budget.

ouch that's a shame :(
if that's the case, then would consider this set for £500:
ryzen 5600/x
32gb ram
6700xt

you could probably get back about £170-180 when selling your current 3600x/16gb/1660s

So back to the topic.

Could go AM5 but not a good bang-for-buck solution right now.
So it's a case of 5700x vs 5800x3d
Is 16 GB of RAM still enough? If not, replace for 2 x 16 GB or purchase another matching pair of 8 GB sticks, if still available?

Then a question of replacing the 1660super for a (?), if a good option. I preferred Nvidia at the time as the drivers were more stable, still the case?

Thank you

specifically for ryzen better to run with 2 sticks of ram as the memory controller can be very finicky. so better to get 2x 16gb than 4x 8gb

So it's a case of 5700x vs 5800x3d
if you're going to add to the budget by selling your current parts then 5800x3d (upgrade sequence as per micky's post)
the 5800x3d is similar to a 7600x in gaming performance

still the case?
lol no, and you'll have to pay nvidia tax
(but radeons will not have as good ray-tracing and DLSS/CUDA if those matters to you)
would just opt for the best value card
