Upgrade advise - i7-8700 to what?

Big thanks to everyone. So it's looking like I should go for DDR5 6000 C30 ram, B650 board with a 7600/7700 with unless I can find a decently priced 7800X3D - this will give me a bit of a boost with the potential to upgrade to a 9800x3d in the future... perfect

I upgraded from a 8700k with a 3080 12gb last year, so I can help here.

I went to a 5700x last year, which turned out to be more of a sidegrade in real terms. I've just upgraded from that to a 9800X3D (still the 3080) and I'm getting up to 20+ more fps in demanding games. So yeah going AM5 is definitely the right choice.

Wow that's a decent difference.

How much better is the 9800X3D to say the 5700X3D or 9700X?

That I can't say from experience, but I can safely say it would be a lesser jump than from the 5700x. I would look at benchmarks and compare the 5800x (which the 5700x is a lower-binned version of, benchmarks often don't have the 5700x) to the 9800X3D, 5700X3D and 9700X and extrapolate from there.

I would be aiming for 7800X3D minimum, but not at current prices. If you get a 7800X3D, I wouldn't bother planning to get a 9800X3D further down the line. But if I were you and you want to upgrade right now, I'd go AM5 with the cheapest 7xxx CPU you can get with a view to getting a 9800X3D when the dust settles on those. You'll get a nice bump in the interim and still benefit from DDR5 and the new bells and whistles.

EDIT: for anyone curious, I'm at 3440x1440, so not an insubstantial resolution.

7600/7700
if you are getting these cpus, as @Journey has alluded, i would not get them new
either get a used one (the 7600), or one from china (the 7700) especially if these are meant to be stopgap cpus for you to plop in an x3d cpu in future

would stop you eating the cost of depreciation too, if nothing else
fwiw, i did exactly as described and i got a used 7600 as a stop gap and sold it on for exactly the same price when i got my 7800x3d, i got about a year's use off that 7600 for what was, zero cost

I was holding out for one popping up on the MM and when it never happened I bit the bullet and bought new on Black Friday. Two days after a 7700X and a 7900X popped up for sale for less than I paid for my 7600X
Typical isn't it!

I ordered the 7500f not expecting to get the 9800X3D for a while, I ended up getting really lucky and the 9800X3D turned up before the 7500f!

Your 7500F was a other one that popped up after my 7600X was ordered, I'd have bought it otherwise!
should've got the 7500F from china.
i was building a "new" rig as a christmas present for a colleague's kid. paid less than £93 for it

I was too impatient mate, I've got the fatal flaw of when I want something I want it and even next day delivery can been too long at times
I'm the same... will hold off and hold off to compare all the options then when I make the decision I want it straight away :D
patience is a good virtue to have, but totally unnecessary if you have enough money to throw at something :P

Anyone have to rma one yet ?
i've bought 2x 5600, 1x 7500f and 3x AM4 motherboards in the last year and a bit
no issues with all of them so far *touch wood*

it's a 20-30% discount off official routes, and as always, you pays your moneys and you takes your chances
(no different to buying used, second hand parts off ebay/gumtree/FB, really...except these chinese parts are more likely to be new)

Theese Chinese CPU imports concern me if you look at AMD warranty the CPU has to be in a sealed official AMD Retail Box.

Anyone have to rma one yet ?

The only faulty thing I've had over decades of computer use are hard drives.

Also how RMA works now you probably have to go back to manufacturer, probably have to send off to europe anyway. Years ago the shops used to sort it for you.

It’s not an Intel 13th/14th gen. When did you last RMA a CPU? I never have in 20+ years of building PCs.
Done a couple over the years of building pcs but seems slightly more common with newer CPUs being pushed to there limits.

As tamzzy mentioned you pays your money you take a chance.

I mean yeah, the risk you take is no warranty support, which is mostly worth it as the deals are often cheaper than 2nd hand. The 7500F/7700/5700X3D deals on there were pretty bonkers.
