Hi son has a Gygabyte MA785GMT-UD2H (rev 1.1) http://uk.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3274#with a Athlon II X2 250,

Now when playing games (eve, swtor) the cpu will max out at 100%.

So he has the option of upgrading to a new AMD cpu or switching over to intel if its not cost effective to stay with AMD.

His budget for a new AMD is around £100 max and double that if he has to goes Intel

Thanks

Robert

You could buy an older platform 1366 mobo and get an i7 920 for around £200. That would be a good and relatively cheap upgrade.

I have seen a ASUS Sabertooth X58/1366 Socket mobo for £100 new and the 920's can be had for £100 too, maybe less.

This would be a vast improvement for gaming, and may clock up to and possibly over 4 GHz if necessary:

The only thing about upgrading to intel is that of course it would be a big improvement, but not for £200 probably, you'd need to spend more like £250-300 in order to get an i5 2500k or 3570k and a motherboard that will support good clocks, which are in the range of £100+, otherwise you wouldn't be tapping the potential of an i5 chip.

And ultimately games are graphics card limited at resolutions higher than 1680x1050, so the cpu can't have more of an influence than say 10 fps normally. In short that cpu should be totally fine and only requires £90 spent, and perhaps a good plan would be to then think ahead a year and plan to get him a Haswell based intel system?

EDIT: I did some looking around for gaming performance results and this is the WORST case scenario I could find: http://media.bestofmicro.com/D/W/219524/original/image040.png
So it competes with the intel i7 920 at stock speeds and can get within 10 fps of it quite easily.

Thank for the replies looks like it will be to stay with AMD for now and get a SSD when funds permit then save for a new upgrade next year
