Upgrade from a 7800GTX

Lads,
my trusty BFG 7800GTX has served me well but the time has come to upgrade......putting together a Conroe system, so the graphics could use a jump..
Running on a Dell 24inch so would be aiming to run a lot of stuff at 1920x1200..
Was planning to keep hold of the 7800 until the Dx10 cards appear, but for various reasons I may leave the Dx10 until the middle of next year.

Options :-
1. Bite the bullet and go with an X1950 or 7950GX2..
2. Pick up an X1900..

Running on a DFI SLI-DR paired up with an FX-53 at the moment, but the card will end up in my Conroe as soon as the motherboard situation sorts itself out.
Chances are I'll end up with an NForce590 SLI so that may affect the purchase of an ATI, although I'm not married to it..
Have any lads out there jumped from a 7800GTX 256 to one of the above and if so, was it worth it ?
If I go with an X1900, would you lads go for a Crossfire Edition, such as the HIS, and hope that it can clock upto XTX levels, or just bite the bullet and go with the XTX ?
Not 100% certain of going down the Crossfire/SLI route due to the proximity of the Dx10 cards hence the confusion and the Nforce5/Intel 975/965 motherboard dilemma only adds to the problem..

Appreciate any responses lads..

yeah, spend it on something you actually want or need

a graphics upgrade you dont need ;)

Cheers for the replies lads,
just wondering what the likes of a X1900 would do for me.......the 7800 is a great card, but the upgrade bug gets me when I see the likes of FEAR and Call of Duty 2having a little difficulty pushing all effects maxed out around......plus the likes of the Call of Juarez demo doing the rounds.
It just doesn't have the smoothness at the high resolutions that I need anymore.

just clock your card and it wil, hold out a little lomgger

Maybe, but maybe I'm a little hampered having one of the 256mb 7800.........didn't FEAR and such show big improvement at high resolutions with 512mb cards ?

Edit...
Ooops.............meant to say that the FX system will still need a graphics card, so the 7800 could stay in that setup if I wanted to keep it up and running.
So how about an X1900 or 7950 in the Conroe ?

If you must upgrade now then don't bother with an X1950XTX as they're only a few fps (literally in the single digits) better than the X1900XTX. The X1900XT can be had for £199 on this week only, and should overclock to X1900XTX speeds without so much as breaking a sweat.

I would advise waiting, though. A 7800GTX is a fantastic card, and by all rights should hold you until DirectX 10 matures. :)

I have just done that upgrade.

Leadtek 7800GTX to Leadtek 7950 GX2. Just waiting for northbridge hs/f to arrive before i play! Had to install in lower x8 slot (due to zalman in top slot) and it will not recognise both gpu's!

Managed 100k in Aquamarks stock with 7800gtx will compare with 7950 GX2 shortly.

I have a 7800GTX and i'm holding out. All the time it's playing the latest games in the highest settings possible, then it's fine for what I need.

If you do need a performance boost, why not add a second card in SLi (providing you have an SLi mobo). Then when it comes to geting a spanking new DX10 card (whenever that is), then you have 2 cards to sell.

You can pick a second hand 7800GTX now for will under £200..

If you can sell your 7800GTX for £180 then I'd recommend getting an X1800XT (Or 1900XT). It will be slightly better and will have a higher sell price when DX10 is out. I wouldnt go for buying another 7800GTX though.

I went from a 7800GTX to an X1900XT and I can honsetly say the difference was absolutely outstanding. The performance increase was absolutely enormous, especially in COD2. I am yet to encounter a game that the card struggles to render at max settings at 1280x1024.

Providing you sell your GTX for good money, I'd go for the X1900XT.

i've not heard to many people mention the 7950GX2..are they any good? Noisy?

Nothing wrong with them. Best graphics card out atm it's just not a lot of people recommend because spending £350 on a graphics card when DX10 is around the corner is a bit pointless unless you play at very high res i.e. above 1600 x 1200.

Decided to pick up a HIS X1900 Master card,,
Decent value at the moment, should be able to clock it to XTX levels and I'll be able to sell it on to a X1900XT owner when I decide to go DX10..
Cheers for the replies lads..
