Upgrade from an i7 920???

Guys i am looking to upgrade from a i7 920,I have a 4 gig rx 580 gpu,My question what do you guys think of these parts and what would you change if any
Gigabyte A320M-S2
Patriot Memory VIPER 4 Series 3000MHz (PC4 24000) 8GB Dual Channel DDR4 Kit
AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Processor with Wraith Stealth Cooler

Looking to spend roughly 250 euro,Also i have a VAT number

Personally just OC the CPU, had one once, believe I had mine at 4.2GHz. Then just save up.

bang in a x5650 of ebay less than a tenner for a core 12 thread cpu

I try to overclock the i7 920 but it always blue screens,Also i have a aftermarket cooler on it

This is what i did when i had a X58 board with a i7 920 and there was a noticeable boost in performance and it was a great way to extend the life of my pc at the time.

I was running an x5670 @ 4.5ghz it was very solid, scored over 1000 points in cinebench r15

X5650 is 6 cores So you're gaining 2 cores 4 threads and they overclock very well and run cooler than the 4 core i7s at similar clocks.

Yes it should work fine and without a bios update i believe.

Thanks mate,the only thing i was looking at was the rev version which mine is 1.0

Yes its not on the support list i know but it should still work just make sure you update the bios to the last one available before putting in the X5650.

Careful with that board, I'm sure I had the same and that particular model wont overclock a xeon, i had the 920 up to 3.8 though

@shea1980 I had the x58 ud3r rev 1.0 (still do but not powered up) and happily used and overclocked an X5650.

Vcore @1.3-1.35 should be good for 4-4.2
Qpi/vtt 1.25-1.35 depends on how far you push the ram, not a good idea to go over 1.35
Bclk 200 is nice
Cpu ratio 20 for 4ghz with 200 bclk, disable turbo for stability
Qpi link speed, lowest but not slow mode if you have that option
Set uncore to 1.5 - 2x ram speed
Patience...

Google x5650 overclocking guide and there is a lot of good info on the net.

God i remember when that hex core xeon was a new top end cpu, people who had them were gods lol. Everyone was salivating and worried at the same time about that new 32nm process
