1366 X58 Xeon 5650

not a bad board at all, i can see why you wouldn't hit 4Ghz+.
the x5650 top out at 105c and run cooler than the i7's so you should be ok with the cooler too.

also intel burn test put stress on the CPU that is unreal so if your hitting 95c in games you would be around 60c. my current CPU hit 73c when testing but games at 52c

Nice. I think ill go for the X5650! get some extra life from my old system

My board is a ga-x58a-ud3r. Current clock is 3.5Ghz. I can get it to 4 GHz but running intel burn test takes the temp close to 90 degrees so I lower the clock and it tops out at around 75 degrees. I am using an Antec Kuhler to cool the cpu.

I've got a ga-x58a-ud3r revision 1 and it's working fine with an X5670 clocked @ 4.2Ghz.
:)

Picked up a X5675 for my other board as the X5650s seem a little more scarce now.
First impressiions are not too bad. Will do 4410MHz at 1.38V compared to my X5650 which will do 4400MHz at 1.39V. I can of course relax on the BCLK with the X5675 though and possible I can go higher if I was willing to pump volts through it :D

Does anyone happen to know how much power this kind of set up draws?

I'm wondering if my current PSU would handle one of these clocked to 4ghz with a gpu such as a 7970, it's a Corsair VX550 (although it's getting kind of old now at around 7 years).

Idle 155w
Prime (Small) 330w
Heaven 3.0 442w (Peak)

Poss not that accurate, the watt thing was cheap, but might give a ideal

Well with a 200 BCLK would be 3.8GHz. Looks like its +1 multi for turbo (+2 for 2 cores) so 4GHz should be doable assuming chip/board is up to it. Any more than that would require serious BCLK numbers.

I know this thread title says 5650 but I thought this would be a good place to ask.

I currently have:

i7 920
Gigabyte X58-UD5
3x2gb hyperx 1600mhz

Was thinking of grabbing either a 5650 or 5660 but i'm not 100% sure they will be compatible with my motherboard. Its a rev 1.0, they first version of the board.

Also do you guys think it will be a worthwhile upgrade for maybe £60-£70?

I have that exact same board/revision, F13 bios and the X5650 works like a charm.

Worthwhile upgrade? Absolutely, it's a beast of a CPU when overclocked.

Do you know if the 5650 and 5660 are both compatible? I'm not 100% sure that they are both the same revision of CPU.

I just got round to applying an over clock to my x5650 plugged into x58 ud3r Rev 1.0.
(Never had much success with my old 930 so ran that at stock)
First time I've really over clocked and delight with the results as I'm now comfortably running at 4Ghz on air (prolimatech megahalems) in normal usage anyway, I've only run a few Firestrike bench's...

Settings
CPU Ratio 20
Intel Speed Step disabled
BCLK Frequency 200
PCIE Frequency auto
DRAM Frequency DDR3-1600 MHz
UCLK Frequency 3200 MHz

CPU Voltage 1.35
CPU PLL Voltage Auto
QPI DRAM Core Voltage tbc
IOH Voltage Auto
IOH PCIE Voltage Auto
ICH Voltage Auto
ICH PCIE Voltage Auto
DRAM BUS Voltage 1.50
All Other Settings Auto

With speed step enabled it posts (@4.4ghz) but resets before windows loads. I saw similar behaviour with different settings - think the common element was that each time the memory was being pushed over 1600ghz. Even so am delighted with just how easy it was to get this running @ 4ghz!

If it works with a 5650 then it works with a 5660... and 5670, and 5675..... so long as they are in the same family.

Second this with the exact same board. Went from a 920 ~ 3.4ghz to a x5650 at 4ghz. Significant improvement. Best £50 I will probably ever get.

Hard to believe that I bought that motherboard. in 2008.

Well got my new E5649 in and running at 4ghz on all cores, does 4.6 on 2 cores, not as bad as i feared and way cooler then my 960 was, all in all a good investment for 27 pounds :)
