Upgrade Gfx card or System?

Hey guys,

Been out of the whole PC upgrade thing for a while as my PC has been able to handle pretty much anything in full settings until I tried Shogun 2 and the new IL-2 game!

Question is, do I get a new graphics card or am I better off just changing the CPU/Mobo?

My Current rig is

Asus Striker Extream
Intel Q6600
4gb OCZ SLI RAM
BFG 260GTX OC Max Core
Enermax Galaxy 1000W PSU

I am thinking of changing the 260 for a 460GTX however the spec's seem to be just a bit better however the RAM type is GDDR5 and not DDR3.

I don't really want to purchase a new gfx card only to find out that my CPU is acting as a bottle neck and I see a 1fps increase or something silly like that.

Budget would be around the £150 for a Gfx card and probably £250 for a system rebuild (as I could get some cash back for the old cpu etc).

Any advice would be great

cheers

Although that processor is good i would consider upgrading it, this is a tough situation haha!

i could be wrong but i would go with a processor, this would eliminate any bottle neck issue when you go to upgrade your card later

You need to overclock your processor to at least 3.0GHz You also need to overclock you new graphics card 460GTX or radeon 6850 (I prefer this one). Then your system will be a lot better for gaming.

If you go for a new platform, quadcore phenom would be up to twice as fast as your old CPU at stock speed. New intel CPU's are even faster, but they are a lot more expensive. The cheapest good CPU for games from intel would be sandybridge dualcore overclocked.

if the q6600 is overclocked then i would say you still have plenty of life left in your system and should cope with just a graphics upgrade

Never been a fan of the ATI cards (not sure why tbh) however will I be shooting myself in the foot running one on an Nvidia Mobo?

you can get at lease 3.2GHz out of a Q6600, that would not bottleneck unless you use a gtx590 or a very high end sli setup.
upgrading the system to a sandy or AM3 phX4/X6 will be the best but most costly option.
Just getting a viable GPU upgrade will be cost effective.
There is nothing wrong with ATI for me at least - think its to do with the personal preference.
