Upgrade itch, am i mad to want an 8600k with new Ryzen around the corner?

For the sake of just a few weeks it is indeed very silly to go rushing a purchase now whatever the chip.
We might see the new AMD chips land on near parity with intel on gaming while it is a massacre on the multithreaded side, who knows... i would wait.

Just add 10%ish to current ryzen single and multicore, as far as I see it the 8700k will still be ahead.

The 8700 will barley be ahead in single threaded tasks and poorly coded games while it will be getting its ass handed to itself in multi threaded stuff.
Now what you you rather have, a small win over legacy single threaded rubbish or a much more robust multi core cpu... i dont see many reasons to go for the 8700k other than the fps queens waving there epeen.

Yeah I was being ****-ish about it, I've just requested a replacement 8600K.

Honestly thought it was a 6/12 cpu though, rather than 6/6. Doesn't hugely bother me when I'm primarily a gamer but just goes to show you gotta be careful before spouting off crap!

the thing is what do you do with your pc ? your budget and what do want. if you on a budget and do multitasking then ryzen whatever 1 or 2 is a decent path.if its purely for high end fps and just gaming intel is the best option.if you have a no limit budget intel is the best option. there is no crap in that. 8600k is a very fast gaming chip. 8700k is the best just plug in and play top performance gaming chip.no hassle.used to be the i7 6700k/7700k/8700k. you see what i mean.when has amd had a top gaming chip in the last 15 years ?

I've a 165hz monitor so for me it's gotta be Intel. I think for the 'average' gamer it doesn't really matter so much (if at all), one's as good as the other. For me a big killer of Coffee Lake is the lack of availability of cheaper boards. Makes Ryzen the only choice for more budget conscious builds.

Actually bought a new 8600K OEM + Z370 from OCUK the other day to replace a 6700K and they arrived today.....the 8600K with a bent corner out of the box. Gutted.

Is it really worth spending the money for a 8600K and a motherboard over a 6700k chip speaking as someone who owns one ?

I've a 165hz monitor so I think it's worth it for me personally. Plus I'm a big fan of constant upgrades every 2 years or so, costs are relatively small and you get the benefit of keeping performance/value of rig at top tier.

I've got a 165mhz too but I dont have any problems with speed or anything and my rig is quiet and cool. I do like the idea of a smaller case/pc but then is it worth it. Not sure. Think I might pickup Coffee Lake when the next gen Intel comes out thats what I did with the 6700k. Your monitor in your sig needs changing then if you have a 165mhz ?

One thing I am not bothered about is a smaller rig. I never move it anyway and I'd rather a large case with good airflow that is therefore quiet, over a smaller one that is louder. Also I prefer air cooling which necessitates more space for the CPU HSF.

Well I certainly have no issues with the 6700K but it's about getting as close to that 165hz as I can really.

It's actually an XB270HU @ 165hz, that 4K monitor was the worst purchase ever. Not because it was a bad monitor - it was decent - but 4K/60hz gaming on a 28" screen is just a waste.....the XB270HU was what I 'upgraded' from but I've gone back to it.

I change parts so often my sig is never accurate. The only accurate thing in that current one is the GTX1080Ti.

I was looking at upgrading from a 6600k but from this thread best bet is to give it a few weeks incase the amd refresh knocks prices?

Got an ultrawide coming so think the extra cpu budge could be damn useful with my 1080ti. Although upgrading everything is a little daunting.

I reckon there won't be much between the i7-8700K, R5 2600X, and R7 2700X in terms of per-core performance at stock. The i7-8700K will still have more overclocking headroom for sure though.
