Upgrade MSN or do not sign in...sigh

Its microsofts program which they release for free. You should stop moaning and be grateful or use something else.

Yeah, we do them a favor by using it... they develop it to be used and surely the experience of the user is a key part of development.

I do not think anyone here can comment on Microsoft's actual reasoning behind it but I am pretty confident 'enriching' the 'Windows Experience' by adding IM capability to keep people on-side and being able to distribute advertisement is part of the whole goal.

You would think they would continue to keep people on-side by letting people use the app in any version that is actually capable of doing so. 8.5 is, there is no real reason to stop it working other than "We just can".

Unfortunately there are many software companies that force the use of their latest products. However, we live in a world with many alternatives. :)

Going slightly OT I've ditched a few MS products I no longer have to use, MSN for one, Office 2003 and Windows Live.

Here was the "official standpoint" which has clearly not been adhered to.

In early October 2009, customers using versions 14.0 (earlier than 14.0.8089) will also start receiving notifications of the optional upgrades to Windows Live Messenger 9.0 (2009) 14.0.8089.726. In late October, Windows Live Messenger 9.0 (2009) 14.0.8089.726 will become mandatory for them too.

We’ve had several comments about what happens if you are running an operating system on which you cannot install the latest version of Messenger. In this case, you will NOT be prompted to upgrade and can continue to use the version you currently have,” a member of the Windows Live Messenger team noted. “To clarify, if you are running Messenger 8.1, 8.5 or 14.0 on the following operating systems: Windows XP 32bit, Windows Vista (32bit/64bit), Windows 7( 32bit/64bit) or Windows Server 2008, you will receive the upgrade notice.”

What version OS are you using? NT? Me? 98? Since the last bit vlearly says everything else will receive the upgrade notice.

You do receive the upgrade notice. There is a "No" option but it's not optional. it merely closes the dialogue and leaves you logged out.

If its optional for some, why not optional for all. If all they are concerned about peoples security then all they have to do is add a disclaimer and a strict warning about the considerations that need to be made for not upgrading and allow people to say "No thanks"

To those saying nothing wrong with the new MSN, I have a question. Has anyone worked out way to drag and drop files in the way one used to be able to. I used to send pictures to friends, and I'd simply have to drag out of IE or drag from folder to the chatbox and it would start the send connection.
This still works for files of non-picture variety, but for picture files it starts a process of 'picture sharing' which doesn't work at either end in the way file exchange works.
If you wish to send a picture as a file you have to menu send file and browse for it. Significantly slowing the process.

Anyone have a work around or know a setting or solution i am missing?

Err, this happens every day on millions of systems?

When was the last time your saw Exchange, SQL, IIS, ISA etc stop working because you do not have the latest patch applied?

true. however messenger is free and a hell of a lot easier to update to a new version.. if they made exchange, sql, IIS or ISA just stop working when a new version came out (baring in mind 9 times out of 10 they are behind corporate firewalls anyway) theyd have hell on their hands.

i'll post this story as its releveant and true ... and stopped me from doing various things lol ... my pc had someones email and password saved when they had used it on my pc ...

they forgot / didnt realise i still had it and for months i was able to see EVERYTHING they did .. was even able to access thier facebook and reset passwords so i could see what was being said about me by thier mother .. i'll be honest it was an exstranged marriage .

the msn update stopped me from doing this as even tho i could log in with th epassword ... once i tried to access teh email part i had to inout the email passowrd again .. which i didnt have . but in teh end it was a good thing as the marraige was over and allowed me to move on . i coul dhave doen that and made me bitter a long time ... learned to move on .. glad it came into play tbh

The lastest version of A-Patch, (it was quietly updated not too long ago) added this one ability to revert back to the classic way of sending files through drap and drop.:)

Thanks RKO I shall give it a look, i think neil_g completely missed the point of what i was asking, seeing as I said it had become cumbersome to use the menu send, rather than handy drag-n-drop.

yeah alright so i mis-read.. lol

i got a little bored of reading the entire threads worth of bitching to be honest ;)

i believe you can disable the photo-sharing crap, but it only works if the other person does it too or something??? Not too sure to be honest. A Patch has an option in it to disable this, and it does work sometimes (usually with people I know have also used a patch) but with others that haven't i still get the photo sharing thing
