Upgrade now or wait - Android

I can upgrade my magic from today. I could call voda now and get a shiny new Desire HD (or even pop into my local voda store who have confirmed they have some.)

However, I could live with it for another month or so if there was something much better on the horizon. I would rather not since the accelerometer is broken, but I could.

I know dual core is just around the corner. Anybody have a feel for what is coming and how much of a difference it will make. I like the DHD but patience is a virtue and all that. Looking at 18 month contract so I want as future proof as possible (although recognise that all tech is instantly rendered rubbish and old the moment you walk out of the shop!)

So should I go DHD or wait?

Id personally wait now, as Samsung are due to make a press announcement today I believe. Also as above we should start to hear news of the Dual Core handsets arriving shortly.

I am tempted to wait. I'm going to be travelling most of this week and next anyway so wouldn't be able to fully enjoy it (as roaming and will be expensive for data)

I have read about delays in that but there is so much conflicting info and rumour.
The doubt is more over whether Samsung are to make it, or whether the device they are announcing is completely different. Motorola are also in the running for the nexus 2 with their T2, and haven't debunked the possibility unlike Samsung.

This is the phone Samsung are expected to announce today.
I'd expect any mention of Nexus 2, whoever it is made by to come with the announcement of Gingerbread

yep, I also read that a hardware prob has delayed what was to be an announcement on the Nexus 2. Pretty sure we could start a rumour about it in seconds!

eek, that's not going to stop me getting a DHD! Still think I will at least wait the next 2 weeks and see what's happening.

The only thing that seems to have been rumoured consistently is that there is some delay with the Nexus 2, but then that's been hashed together with earlier rumours of samsung announcing it today, or motorola releasing it with gingerbread launch. Unfortunately with so much obviously duff information it's just a wait and see. Fortunate for me as I wasn't looking able to get a DHD until near xmas anyway, so hopefully it will still drop right for me.

Nexus II info should be released today

As pointed out above its the Continuum expected today, which is CMDA and as such useless to us.

TechCrunch is reporting the Nexus II has a serious hardware flaw and has been delayed as a result of that (Should have outsourced it to HTC :p )

Personally I'd get a Z over an HD, but that's just me. I can't see anything significantly better than those two on the horizon.

Also, if you keep waiting for the next big thing you'll never get anything :p

What are dual core phones likely to add? Prettier effects a la Win 7 aero but how else could a phone benefit? More advanced games maybe? Decoding / encoding stuff...but what would you encode or decode on a phone? General snapiness is all I can imagine.

The Desire HD is a brick :D Its massive and thick, if you want slim and close to iPhone size then the Samsung Galaxy S or original Desire is better for Android phones.

What about the all important e-peen?

I can't see android games needing more than the DHD for sometime as games designers would not want to spec a game that couldn't be played on the vast majority of phones.

More horsepower is exactly that really. Driving more technical apps, driving bigger displays etc... More cores just allow more parallel tasks to happen but there's no reason. Depending on how each OS deals with threading would impact on it's ability to improve apps. GPU acceleration would sort the majority of game issues really.

The DHD is 1mm longer, 4mm wider, and 1.8mm thicker, so not that much bigger than the SGS for .3" more screen size.

I agree it's pretty heavy though, but this (amongst other things) helps to give it more of a feeling of quality imo compared to the SGS.

If you aren't in a hurry, hang on for a week or two but if you are impatient the DHD wont go out of date extremely fast.
