What kind of games would you like to play on your new PC? I am still running a i7 920 and with 2 GTX 680s in SLI there is no game that I cannot max at 2560x1440. The most demanding game I own is BF3 btw before someone flames me for that last comment.
Trust me when I say that your best upgrade options without spending a lot of money are (a) an SSD for overall general use and loading of apps and (b) a new Graphics card, esp. if you are at 1080p, in which case you will get a massive performance boost by going for the higher end offerings from Nvidia and AMD. If a Single Card, I would recommend the 7970 with the Never Settle Bundle.
Either of the above 2 options will make you a very happy man imo. The 920 is still a great CPU - check this recent and active thread if you don't believe me: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18501282&highlight=920
