hi guys i would like to know your thoughts whether to upgrade my pc or buy a ps3 to play gaming on ... i spent £1400 1.5 years ago on a brand new pc and im wondering wether to change over to a ps3 as the costs of upgrading your computer is so dear ,now my pc is no slouch but i want either to upgrade my pc or buy a ps3 ..one thing benefits the ps3 as there seems to be more choice in gaming titles as compared to the pc. all the best games seem to be on the consoles and theres more variety for them . i know its down to your own personal preference but i would be interestd to know if you think the consoles are winning the gaming wars or are pcs holding there own

Do both, I did, lol.

PC still has the edge I think though, there are loads of games that the PC has and will have that the consoles either don't have, or play poorly.

If you wan't to multiplay game over the net, then the PC is better by miles.

Depends what you play and how you want to play really.

How did you manage to spend £1400? Get ripped off often?

You can build a stonking gaming PC from scratch for about £400!

Not everyone builds their own. And no doubt that price includes a monitor too, Still not £1400 like.

Also, a £400 spec includes what graphics card and Power supply? Is the card going to last playing high end games the way they should, on a monitor size and resolution that we don't know?

Do what I used to do when I was into PC Gaming.

Don't buy low the budget end hardware, but then again don't buy the really expensive stuff. Go for somewhere in the middle. £1400 is an insane amount of money to spend on a PC., and judging by your sig/profile area you have got quite a mean bit of kit. There is no need to upgrade it yet!!

I spent £650 on a PC three years ago - PIV 3.0 Ghz, Geforce 6800 GT, 2 GB RAM etc etc. I initially intended playing games on it, however other things I have going on in my life have precluded me from doing this. If I did play games on it, the only thing I'd probably have upgraded by now would have been the graphics card.

I still use the PC for studying and virtualisation (running virtual servers/clients within VMWare) and it still does the job quite nicely.

In the next 12-18 months I'll probably look at upgrading, but then again not spending the earth.

I spent just under £400 last year on an upgrade and I'm running the current crop of games on max without a hitch (fallout 3, FC2 etc). For the equivalent cost of buying a PS3 and the games you an buy a PC and play the PC versions (about half the price of console games), which are often better. I'd only consider going the PS3 route if you're interested in the exclusives.

Sound advice from HaX, too. 8800GT can be had for £50 will eat any PC version of the console games for breakfast.

I gave up on the constant loop of upgrade, play for 6 months, upgrade, play for 6 months, etc, etc...

I bought a release date PS3 rather than continue to spend an obscene amount of money every 6 months, and I can honestly say I'm very very happy with my purchase. If you're used to a fairly cutting edge PC, you will notice a loss in quality, though for me this was far outweighed by a huge TV and sitting in comfort rather than sat a desk the whole time. There are a few games, regrettably that I've missed out on by going down this route, but I can honestly say I'm not too bothered.

Personally, finances dependant of course, I would go down the route of a relatively future proofed PS3.

In my case, I'll be upgrading the PC the next time I get a bonus from work....likely to be March 2010 :/

i suspect most people are gonna say switch over to ps3 on a console forum ;).

i always seen pc and ps3/360 as different markets as they both get very different genres... they only really share one genre and thats fps.

think about what kind of games you want... but ill break it down as i see it:

pc: fps, rts, mmo, westrern rpgs, strategy, flight sims
consoles: fps, action, adventure, rpgs, racing, platform, sports, beat em ups, music rhythm

so it really depends what kind of games you are into because you will find many games on console that you wouldnt ever see on pc and vice versa.

It really comes down to what games you like, how much of a big deal online gaming is, and whether you have freinds/colleagues playing on consoles. I went down the PS3 route for varies reasons (mainly Bluray), but from a gaming point of view it was the diversity of the games the consoles offer over a PC, and the fact that I can game in the comfort of my lounge on my HDTV/sofa.

Virtually all my real freinds that game went from PC's to PS3's so it was an easy decision for me.

The majority of multiplat games always seem to get released much later on the PC and there appears to be more console exclusives than PC exclusives currently so the answer was pretty clear, havent looked back since owning a PS3.

Most multiplat games are more of an afterthought for the pc and more akion to a poor port. Their are exceptions but they are rare.

Are there any games you can't play perfectly well with that setup? And forthcoming games too I expect?

If so then upgrading it at this time seems unnecessary and you'd get more out of a console purchase.

(btw are you sure you've got DDR3 and not DDR2? ;))

With a setup like that i would say its not even worth upgrading; my pc isn't that good and it plays everything on the market (bar crysis obviously) perfectly on maximum/near maximum settings.

Buy a PS3 and upgrade your PC in a year.

I hate to start this and will probably kick myself later, but if you're interested in more available gaming titles I'd get a 360 ;)

Thing is, the majority of 360 exclusives surface on the PC eventually, since he's already got a good gaming PC he may as well use that for Gears of War, Mass Effect etc. While there are fewer exclusives on the PS3, very few ever surface on the PC so in order to get access to the most games i would be willing to bet the PS3 is his best choice in this situation.

Dont worry we'll kick you instead if it makes you feel better :p

Looking towards the future i see the PS3 line up being larger than the 360's simply down to the fact that Sony has far more 1st and 2nd party studios than MS and 99% of them are only on Playstation consoles. To the OP your PC is good for at least another 18 months Id say no need to upgrade at present, and by then this console gen will be close to its prime and perhaps the next gen consoles will be known about.

I find the PS3 is extremely limited and annoying for arranging games with friends. Its like Sony and/or game developers go out their way to make it tough for you to create a friends game...

Either that or they have a deal with phone companies, since you will spend a bit of time phoning each other rather than using the crap msging thing on the console.

Upgrade PC for more fun online.

i did what you're contemplating, i'd never go back.

about 1 year ago i got sick of the constant updating you need to do to PCs to keep them top to mid range, and i was about to start on the 3rd in 2.5 years but thought 'stuff it' traded my PC of the time for a laptop, bought a 360 and haven't looked back! i can't emphasise how much of an improvement it is to know that my 360 will play all games that come out for it (without having to spend £1000 on it every 1-1.5 years) and i have the added mobility a laptop provides over a PC
