upgrade pc or change to ps3

Check out the following recent games on the PC as all are superior to the consoles:

Dead Space
Fallout3
Left 4 Dead
NFS: Undercover
Tomb Raider Underworld
Far Cry2
Lost Planet Extreme Colonies Edition (free LIVE cross platform play against 360 players).
Gears Of War

I give you fallout 3 and L4D are better on the PC but the others not much in it at all and thats only in the GFX dept. But when can you play Uncharted, LBP, Resistance, motorstorm, Gran turismo, Final Fantasy 13, Tekken 6, Metal gear solid 4, Killzone 2, Heavy Rain, etc etc on the PC. The answer is you cant, thats why its worth getting a PS3. I must have a mutant hand as i can think of 15+ games worth getting for the PS3 :D. I have a pretty decent gaming PC and probably got 3 games this year for it last year it was 2, fallout 3 on the PC is a buggy mess at times but will be the best version in the end though. Maybe im not anti PC or Pro console both have there merits, and a PS3 complements the PC games catalogue very well in my opinion.

Y'see i like to play a game not dribble over how luvly it looks ;)

The only winner in the graphics whoring is ATI and Nvidia counting the money consumers are spending thinking it will turn a rubbish game into the holy grail of gaming.. Graphics dont make a great game.

Most people dont have a 40"+ HDTV in their bedroom OR their pc in their living room to connect up to the HDTV as well.

Just more faffing about tbh.

Not everyone builds their own. And no doubt that price includes a monitor too, Still not £1400 like.

Also, a £400 spec includes what graphics card and Power supply? Is the card going to last playing high end games the way they should, on a monitor size and resolution that we don't know?

So what if it doesn't include a monitor? If he has a HDTV he can use that, how come nobody factors in the price of a HDTV when buying consoles, how one sided.

For £400 you can EASILY get an 8800GT system, I currently use an 8800GT and it still runs games far better than the consoles can. That includes Left 4 Dead and Dead Space for instance maxed out at 1920x1200, even higher than 1080P.

Actually for around £250 you can build an 8800GT rig, so for £400 you'll be laughing and yes, that is including the power supply, the entire base unit.

Anyway, get both. It's not expensive to build a capable gaming PC.

So much dribble in this thread, some people really are too lazy or unable to work a computer, it's not that much more hassle than consoles at all. I install a game and play it, hey funnily enough I do the same on my 360 now thanks to NXE. How about that! As for the "faffing" about with drivers, what are you doing to your computers? I update my drivers once a month and have never had any issues with games. If you can't keep your rig up to date (which is simple) then yeah, you're obviously too inept for a PC as a gaming platform.

I'm split 50/50 between consoles, I would rather not play Left 4 Dead at all than play the 360 version, people are already making some free content that looks fantastic (DOTD shopping mall yes please). As much as I like my PS3 and 360 I would never be without a capable PC. For online gaming it is unmatched.

with Vista i dont think its as strong in that regard as it once was.

Nothing wrong with Vista and gaming, it's a very capable OS and has been for a good while now. Only in early 2007 was it questionable for playing games.

Why is it one or the other? I play a game on PC while taking in the better visuals and enjoying the game.

i think whats gotten to me is like some of you have said its the constant upgrading and more importantly the cost every 18 months or so

nVidia 8800 range has been out for over 2 years, yet they are still running games better than the consoles are. You don't need to upgrade all the time to match the consoles, only if you want the best available to have every possible setting up. That said the 8800GTS/GTX are still capable of maxing current releases out.

I don't know why everyone assumes that on PC games you HAVE to have the game maxed out on a beast machine to enjoy it, this is simply not the case. (and by turning down the settings I don't mean so the game looks terrible)

There, think I've made my post as fair and accurate as I can, off to bed. :D

What some people seem to be doing is debating whether he should go for PC or PS3. What they've missed is that it's whether he should UPGRADE his PC or buy a PS3.

His PC already has a decent CPU and an 8800GTX, more than enough to run any game (bar crysis) at maximum/near maximum settings, does he really need an upgrade? I would say no, a PS3 at this point would be the better choice and then an upgrade in a year or so. The 8800GTX will be able to run any game well for a long while yet.

Im a recent PS3 owner, who mainly bought it over the X360 because of the blu-ray support (and I really couldnt accept the fact that the X360 was so accident-prone) but have spent probably the same on my PC recently to upgrade. Im VERY happy with my purchase and I think Ive actually bought at a time where the PS3 is getting into shape as a decent gaming platform - Ive not had any issues finding quality games that I want to play (indeed its the complete opposite) and the future looks bright...

Im never gonna stop gaming on the PC and Im well aware that to keep playing games on it Im gonna have to continual spend money on it (say every 18months), but I was well aware of that fact and still happy to do so because theres a few genres of games that lend themselves to the PC due to the input method - the higher fidelity is also untouched (its weird hearing friends talk about HD console games, when in essence Ive been playing those graphics for probably 5years+).

If I was you, Id definitely get a console, but keep spending money on my PC (if there are games you will still want to play on it) - they are for most part 2 different arenas. Lets be honest to upgrade the core of your system (CPU+RAM+Mobo+GFX card) probably wouldnt be more than £500 for high-end mainstream - which is not that much if you only do it 18months...

Now if consoles had universal games support for keyboard and mouse where needed, I would actually consider just owning a console and a laptop...

P.S. Ive just upgraded my PC recently and its still got 'worst' specs than your current PC - E5200, 4Gb RAM, P5Q and G92 8800GTS ;). Please get a PS3 and dont upgrade your PC - nothing wrong with it tbh...

ps3ud0

I never noticed this reply, My argument wasn't one aiming to compare to a PS3. More a £400 vs a £1400 system.

Im guessing the £400 system mentioned would never have included a Monitor. :p

On a side note, I had no idea the 8800GT's had dropped to £75, Time to replace my 5200 atlast :D

Maggie, i actually agree that PC will provide the best experience if you are willing to put in the effort and time and connect it up to hdtv and can afford it and can get the game working a treat without problems. But i'd have to hire someone to do that for me because its way to much time and hassle.

capable ehh So better than XP for gaming then?

can't say I've ever had a PC that unstable or problematic but there ya go

Well i like to tweak games on the pc and play mods etc. Ive got at least 8 games ony my shelf where there were issues running them. Hey i'll list them for you.
Oblivion (eventually got graphic corruption i think due to the mods i was running at the time - the problem didnt appear initially)
Call of Cthulhu (crashed if i ran it higher than 1024x768)
Dawn of War (crashed during intro)
Heroes of Might and Magic V (crashed if i ran it at higher than 1024x768 res)
Bf2142 (crashes occasionally)
BG2 (occasionally crash on loading/going to another screen/area)
Witcher (eax crashing)
Vampire Bloodlines (various crashes and bugs prior to the patches)

Now i got them all running (cept Dawn of war) so i could play them fine but the point is i have to tweak them or download drivers that would work with it or disable EAX to stop crashes, update directx, update another driver, install net frameworks blah blah blah etc

Dont have time for that messing about tbh. When i buy a game i dont want to be messing about in the settings just to get a reasonable framerate.

How many console games do i have to go through the same shenanigans?

ZERO

:)

Couldnt be bothered readin all the posts..but I hate playing FPS and Third Person shooters on consoles.. just doesnt belong there. I however, did buy a Xbox 360 and would perhaps only play these for co-op with a m8 and also to play Pro Evo :) My PC just isnt good enough for the newer games and I only play CS on it

Get a PS3.

After years of gaming with home / personal computers (from the ZX81 onwards !!) I decided to get my very first console (PS3) at launch initially just to drive a new HD telly with HDMI / blu-ray. And do you know what ? - I havent bought or played a single PC game since

Here's how I've benefited by making the switch :-

I lost the PC upgrade pug and saved a fortune in the process
I get to sit in a comfy chair to play games, not locked away in the study like some leper
I get to play multiplayer games not just over the net but with a few friends in situ - its just more social
I know more people with PS3's than those who game using a PC.

My PC which I spent over 1k upgrading a couple of years ago is now just used for printing / surfing / DVD burning etc. The graphics card alone cost more than the PS3 does now . I wont be upgrading it ever - it'll last a few years yet but when it goes I'll simply repair it or replace it with a laptop.

in some games I believe that is the case, I am in work so cant go searching the exact ones, But I'm sure I've seen some.

tbh that is rare from what ive read. With the very newest games yeah certainly not for older games...xp all the way.

Unless you have a link to some study done....... e.g. Crysis does it run better on Xp or Vista?

Upgrade pc or change to ps3 trouble-shooter ;)

1. Is there any specific ps3 game that you wanted to play that is not on PC or seems would be better?

2. Is there a PC game out that you feel you need to adjust your current rig to play to your desired specification?

3. Is there any specific PC game that is not on console or seems better on PC?

1. yes 2. yes 3. yes - Your in a dilemma upgrade your PC and get a PS3

1. yes 2. yes 3. no - get a PS3 as at least you can still play the PC games you desire with your current rig maybe not at max settings

1. yes 2. no 3. no - get a PS3 and seems nothing of interest for you on PC

1. no 2. no 3. no – Keep your current rig you don’t need to upgrade or get a PC

1. no 2. yes 3. yes - Upgrade that PC

1. no 2. no 3. yes - Just keep your current rig then

I found a link with 1 or 2 that run better, As I said I knew a few did, And now I realise the reason I know this. COD4 runs better under Vista, And I saw this posted in a thread stating so :p
