upgrade pc or change to ps3

i did what you're contemplating, i'd never go back.

about 1 year ago i got sick of the constant updating you need to do to PCs to keep them top to mid range, and i was about to start on the 3rd in 2.5 years but thought 'stuff it' traded my PC of the time for a laptop, bought a 360 and haven't looked back! i can't emphasise how much of an improvement it is to know that my 360 will play all games that come out for it (without having to spend £1000 on it every 1-1.5 years) and i have the added mobility a laptop provides over a PC

Its that constant updating that makes PC gaming so much more than what any console can do ;)

But i can understand why people would prefer to just play on a console

so much more how?

The only edge it has are better graphics and even then you have to juggle drivers, peripherals, patches, system tweaks *constantly* to get optimum performance from a game. Its like a house of cards - you might have a game working brilliantly looking gorgeous one day but then change one tiny thing on your system and bam suddenly you get unknown crashes in the game, graphical corruption, sound buggered up etc etc and it never ends.....

So you spend a lot of time *tickering* with the game and the PC not actually playing the game.

If you want to actually just play the game without any hassles then get a console :) (and a mid spec computer for pc stuff)

I've had a pc for years and ive got a ps3.

I wouldnt say ive spent a lot of time tinkering, it runs overclocked yes but... Its had the same clock settings for well over a year now, un touched.

I install drivers when new ones are released but even thats just around 5mins to do really. (no longer than a fireware update to the PS3)

If i had all those problems you mentioned then i would see yir point, but its like you have just collated everything that can possibly go wrong and added them into yir post in an attempt to make a point.

Recently jumped back into PC gaming in a big way cos i remembered how much i loved TF2. However, it seems like since all of the weapons patches (been a while since i've played it) the game keeps crashing to desktop. I'm currently waiting for a reply from valve tech support...

Then you must be unbelievably lucky either that or you dont play games on it. (certainly not old games anyway)

I think you're just a bit to one sided to actually answer what the op is asking, then again maybe im a bit to one sided for the PC. I do use both though ;)

Anyway you speak as though both consoles offer 100% reliability in playing old PS or xbox games :P Every machine has its flaws, its what you want from it that counts.

Maybe the Op should post his prefered game types...

I've always been driven by PCs and pretty much hated consoles for no real reason, other than you can upgrade a PC and make games look better, but you can't upgrade a PC.

I spent £1200 on my PC about 3 years ago and it was mid-high spec, now though, it's low spec, if not in need of replacement. But rather than spend another £1000 on the PC I bought a console, I was offered a 360 by a friend at an over the top price, but took it and haven't looked back, infact I have now bought a brand new 360 Elite because I want to ensure I have full support from MS (plus it's black which is much cooler than Halo Edition, and it has a 120GB hdd instead of a 20GB hdd).

I also want to buy a PS3, again instead of upgrading the PC. My PC does what I need it to do these days...MSN, Internet, BF2 (randomly) and act as a Media Server.

To be honest, take the plunge, and see if it's right for you, if not, it's not that hard to sell on a console/PC parts. :)

 can't say I've ever had a PC that unstable or problematic but there ya go.

What?

My PC sure as hell works better than most Xbox 360s.

upgrading pc or new ps3

hello again thanks for all your comments guys youve given me plenty to think about . i think whats gotten to me is like some of you have said its the constant upgrading and more importantly the cost every 18 months or so , its so much easier to just buy a console and thats it ! no upgrading or nothing ! i know the games are a bit dearer but i still think ill be quids in .... thanks once again !

Don't worry about the price of games too much, if you buy intelligently they don't work out that much more than PC games.

For example, i can buy Little Big Planet or Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, two games released this month, for around £27 each.

Also dont forget game rentals also help ease the price difference between games, you cant rent PC games as a rule and you can trade them in. I spend less on games on my PS3 than i did on my PC simply because i rent many games and trade in others.

I use both as well. If you want to exclusively play games then consoles are the hassle free way to do that.

The plus points of the PC with playing games is its customisability and scaling but this also creates the problem of extra bugs cropping up. e.g. Oblivion - i think i had about 20 mods running on it and for a while it ran fine then problems occurred. I was tired of wasting time trying to track down the problem when i wanted to be playing the game. If you like playing really old games as well as newish ones then you are gonna get compatibility problems.

The pc's ability to play the greatest number of different types of games for me was always one of its main strengths - with Vista i dont think its as strong in that regard as it once was.

I have both consoles and generally rent games and have them as a "first experience". Then I'll pick up the PC version a bit later when the bugs have been squashed if I want to play the game again and go through it at higher res, mouse+keyboard (or indeed 360 gamepad) for an improved experience.

It all depends on what games you're planning on buying and which system your friends play on for multiplayer.

I've just upgraded my graphics card for COD5, Fallout 3 and Farcry 2. All out for the PC and PS3 and all better on the PC.

Saying that though I have both a PS3 and a PC. I'm gunna buy LBP and MGS4 when I've finished the PC games, but the three PC games all had priority over LBP and MSG4, so I'd go personally go with the PC route.

EDIT: Also I bought my pc two years ago for ~£700 and all I've added since then is a £120 graphics card which should last me for at least another year (I only game at 1360x768.) So it works out at about £300 a year for the PC.

I have a mediocre gaming laptop, a 360 and a PS3. I am thinking of flogging the 360 though as a vast majority of the games for it are on the PC and PS3. It's the PS3 that will have more games that won't appear anywhere else.

hi guys i would like to know your thoughts whether to upgrade my pc or buy a ps3 to play gaming on ... i spent £1400 1.5 years ago on a brand new pc and im wondering wether to change over to a ps3 as the costs of upgrading your computer is so dear ,now my pc is no slouch but i want either to upgrade my pc or buy a ps3 ..one thing benefits the ps3 as there seems to be more choice in gaming titles as compared to the pc. all the best games seem to be on the consoles and theres more variety for them . i know its down to your own personal preference but i would be interestd to know if you think the consoles are winning the gaming wars or are pcs holding there own
Stick with the PC. I bought a PS3 at launch now I cannot sell the thing as no-one wants it even though it has PS1+2 compatibility. You can count on 1 hand how many PS3 games are really worth getting. Most are inferior to the 360 version. I have a 360 as well and the games on that are more comprehensive and you have a much bigger choice but selling that as well because even after the NXE its too noisy. To me the PC is so far ahead of current consoles its unreal. The PC also has the biggest installed userbase worldwide so you will see a lot more games coming out for it (around 120 millon gaming PC's worldwide and climbing).

All you need to do is get a newer gfx card like an ATI 4850 as that is around 20-25% quicker than your 8800GTX (I did the same upgrade a few months ago and could not belive the difference).

If you compare almost any console game which makes it to the PC you will see massive improvements in gfx, quicker loading times & less hassle from multiplayer. Windows LIVE for PC's is now totally free and MS are also building a PC version of Xbox LIVE Marketplace to download Demos, movies & DLC. On certain games you can already play against 360 players (all free as well none of this £40 a year nonsense).

PC gaming requires a little more effort if your having trouble getting something to run but once you hook your PC up to a HDTV the difference to consoles is vast and the experience much better allround.

Check out the following recent games on the PC as all are superior to the consoles:

Dead Space
Fallout3
Left 4 Dead
NFS: Undercover
Tomb Raider Underworld
Far Cry2
Lost Planet Extreme Colonies Edition (free LIVE cross platform play against 360 players).
Gears Of War

Then next month on the PC Grand Theft Auto: IV is out and that offers additional features which are not possible on the console like the video recording & much higher level of graphics detail & draw distance along with a much higher frame rate.

Check out the screenshots here to see how much better they look:
