Upgrade Question.

Hi, this is my first post. How are you all?

Just need some advice on something please.

I am thinking of upgrading my AMD 3700(single core)/1 meg ram system & a nvidia 6800gs graphics card(256 MB) to a AMD 6000(dual core)/2 meg ram system & the leadtek 8800GTS (640MB) gfx card as featured on the OcUK site.

How many times faster do you reckon this overall system will be to play the latest games? For example test drive unlimited averages around 25-30 FPS on my current system, would i be able to hit the 100+ FPS mark with the new gear or is this a little bit too ambitious?

I think you would see a substantial increase in performance. Hard to say exactly, personally I haven't used the AMD processors since my 1.6ghx Athlon.

I don't think you'd be disappointed, the 8800's are good cards.

depends on what game, but overall, the system you will build will be by far superior to the older system.

Anyway to your question, I'm sure most would agree that a core 2 duo is the way to go for performance at the moment so maybe going down the Intel route is a better bet.
If you want/have to buy a AMD chip then the 6000 is at a very good price and worth a shout, performance improvement would be quite big over the old system.

Now onto TDU performance, I have to say that you're getting impressive performance from your system, I was just wondering what graphic settings you're running, people have been reporting 30 odd fps average with C2D/640MB GTS rigs running full settings on 1680 x 1050 resolution so if you're looking for 100+ fps average maybe is asking a bit too much for a GTS.

Was running test drive at 1024x768, no AA & 4x anisotropic. It was running 25-30fps at best but was dipping down to 15-20fps in many places. Basically unplayable!

Just a question on the AMD 6000 dual core. Does the AMD 6000 bit still mean AMD's equilavent of 6 ghz? Would this in effect be a 6 ghz dual core?

AMD use a performance rating, it would be no where near 6Ghz.

The intel Core 2 Duo's are a much better cpu, even more so when overclocked.

I guess an AMD6000 actually runs around 3Ghz but aren't AMD meant to be much more efficient on cpu cycles than intel? I did think the 6000 bit meant 6 Ghz, my AMD3700 definately feels like a 3.7 Ghz!!

I think its proven that the C2D is better than the AMD X2 at gaming and, read some benchmarks for comparison, oh it's definitely not 6Ghz and far less overclockable than the C2D so yes time has changed.

AMD's used to be the preffered chips for gamers until the C2D's came out, AMD can't touch them now, so yes times have changed.

Thanks, nice to be here! What is the best value for money 8800 out there?
Would it be worth waiting for the 8800 ultra to come down in price?
I suppose the 8800 ultra will be around the £250 mark when the 9 series come out at the end of the year? Or am i wrong here?
