Thinking of revamping my pc with a new build in time for windows 10

Currently on core 2 duo 6320 @1.86ghz.

System only used for light web surfing, occasional gaming (sim city, football manager), and occasional photo/video editing.

Thinking of getting z97 board and coupling that with either a overclocked G3258 , I3 4160 (similar performance to oc g3258 without high power usage)or go all out on a i5 4690k.

Or should I wait for the new range of cpu n boards with the ddr4 memory?

As you are looking at new everything including memory I would wait for skylake and it's new socket with DDR4. It's only 2-3 months away now. I would say it's going to be £210+ for a unlocked i5 though.

it will be new board + cpu + graphics

I have 8gb of ddr3 1600mhz vengeance ram sitting boxed....so could use that if required.

Is DDR4 not quite expensive?
What sort of cost base would I be looking at with the new skylake chip for chip board n ram?

We don't really know but going from current prices the unlocked i5 is already a ridiculous £200 so new product I reckon the i5 6600k will be in the £210-220 range, a decent motherboard in the £100-120 range and 8Gb of DDR4 starting in the £60-70 range. Coolers should still fit as it's only a extra pin so if it fits 1150/1155/1156 it should fit 1151.

Seeing as you have 8 GB of ram I would be tempted of getting a G3258 and clocking the nuts off it in this:-

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97P-D3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £61.99

The problem I have with that is it's only a dual core and more games are requiring more cores these days. Your photo/video editing could be held back if the software you use is coded for quad cores or more as well. I wouldn't buy a 4690k unless you can find one on sale for around £160 brand new. £200 is just disgusting for a i5.

Read a few reviews on the Pentium chip and think it would be underpowered for my purposes...so striking that off my list.
Also thinking the skylake might be a bit over budget for my purposes as my desktop gets used less and less these days.

so i3 + H81 board

or

i5 + z97 board

yeah I am probably gonna wait a little and that way future proof myself for a few years more with skylake and the new socket.

The gigabyte board above + 4690k when it's price dips, somethings got to give don't imagine they are flying off the shelves at £180+.
Your ram will be fine with it and not limit it's punch at 1600mhz.

Secondhand 2500k 2600k 2700k + board is better value, thinking about buying a 2600k myself, and am sat on that gigabyte z97 board and g3258.
Why pay double the £ for 5-10 % faster clock for clock, if you even get that clock thanks to intels cruddy non soldered haswell chips.
