I have a PC which quite frankly is in need of an upgrade. I have it about 7 years and this upgrade will have to last a long time too.

CPU is an Intel Core Quad Q6600 @2400 Ghz
Graphics is a Geforce 8800 GTS
6GB of PC 6400 RAM
Hiper PSU - 580W
Windows 7

I intend the keep the case, CD Rom, hard drives and Hiper PSU and replace the Mobo, CPU, Memory and GPU.

I do some gaming but only have one Monitor and only play COD and hopefully Battlefield 4.

Can you please advise if it is best to go GTX 970 or R 9 280/290 ? Or would something else be more suitable?

I believe the Nvidia is a much lower power GPU, and will be cheaper to run.

1 x Gigabyte Z97X-SLI - Devils Canyon Core i5 4690K Bundle **£14 Saving** £258.58

Happy with the CPU but is this the best mobo bundle ?

1 x TeamGroup Xtreem LV 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-21300C11 2666MHz Dual Channel Kit (TXD38G2666HC11CDC01) £65.99

I think 8GB of memory is ample.

Regarding my Hiper 580W Power unit will this be adequate ?

With such a large amount of upgrades will I be able to keep my copy of Windows ?

Many thanks

You should certainly buy a new PSU, those ones had the unfortunate nickname of "Hyper explosive".

Apart from the fact that they explode often taking other components with them, your so called 580w psu only has 360w on the all important 12v rail soyou are going to need a new, decent psu anyway. If you don't mind fixed cables take a look at the Superflower Golden Green HX 550w or if you want modular take a look at the Superflower Leadex Gold 650w. Just in case you have never heard of them, Superflower is one of the best psu manufacturers in the world and use high quality components in their units.

The motherboard and cpu bundle are good. The problem I can see from the ram is that the tall heatspreaders might get in the way if you have a large cpu cooler.

OK so point taken about Hyper PSU so have added a Superflower 650W one

So as Ionly use one Monitor would this be good?

changed the psu. 550w is sufficient. thats £18 saved.
changed the ram. yes it's slower, but it's low profile. if you have a tower heatsink, the tall ram in your post will not allow fitting of the heatsink.

The tall RAM could fit if you use slots2+4 counting away from the socket.

All depends on the tower heatsink.

Initially I don't intend to overclock. So will be using the stock heatsink.

I'd spend like £15 on something like the Raijintek Aidos as it should allow a small OC when it comes to it and will be quieter than the stock heatsink - well worth £15 imo :)
