Definitely going for the DS3 and some PC6400. Going to run the ram at 400 1:1 so looking at 2.8 and 3.2GHz on the 6300 and 6400 respectively.

Questions are:

Will it be worth spending the extra £30 for the 6400?
and
Am I pretty much guaranteed those clocks on the two cpus?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

They will both overclock to those values easily as long as they have good enough memory and mobo. But if your ram can only do 400 good timings then play safe and go for the 6400. Then you can push it a little further, towards 3.4ghz if your lucky :)

I would be happy with 3.2GHz, in fact 2.8 tbh.

I hear about 6300 getting to 3GHz+ all the time, never heard much about the 6400s.

I'm also trying to decide between the E6300 and E6400.

I'll be using the Asrock Conroe945G-DVI Mobo and Corsair 1GB DDR2 Value Select PC5300 Dual Channel Kit (2x512MB).

What would be best?

Also just noticed that the E6300 and E6400 are both called Allendale, when I thought they where Conroe. Is this right ?

technically there all conroes according to intel, but either way the difference is between the 4MB & 2MB caches.

I've yet to see a DS3 and 6400 with decent ram not do 3 ghz on stock voltage, im on 3.2 with stock voltage at the moment

Can't the DS3 use a RAM dividers??

You should be able to get the E6300 to 3.2Ghz~ if you're lucky. Use a pretty low divider to get the RAM from 470 down to around 400. Something like 6:5 would work.

Intel CPU's are bandwidth limited, using a neg divider would impact performance.

WHat are your bios settings fenderbass? Turned off legacy usb? set the pci-e freq from auto to 101?

@op most e6300/400's clock past 3ghz.

Can you help me out by explaining that any further? I have to use a 8:5 divider with my DDR400 RAM to get it down to a 187 bus speed from the 300 FSB. I can't say I've noticed any significant performance impact and it's of course necessary for my system anyway.

i upgraded from a 6300 to a 6400 because i felt i was limited by my mobo for my overclock but had no intentions of changing the mobo.

:confused: :confused: :confused:

Did you read what you just typed. Stupidist thing ive ever read.

If he meant that he couldn't up the mobos FSB any more then he can validly claim another 300 or 400mhz because of the 8 times multiplier on the E6400. In my opinion it's not worth it because most decent mobos aren't limiting the cpu. For the money he spent he could probably have gotten a decent board but maybe he's an Asrock DV user like myself.

EDIT: Just checked his sig. I don't know what he's doing then. I doubt he'd get much if any better speed from the E6400. Maybe he can tell us himself.

E6400 + DS3 + Corsair XMS2 RAM and it won't do 3GHz.
E6300 + S3 + Corsair XMS2 Ram ( 667MHz Cas4 variety @ 1:1 ) and its currently doing 3.15GHz , Orthos stable for 8 hours by the time i decided to stop the test.
Air cooled with Scythe Ninja RevB

CPU = Week 27
