Upgrade to E6300 or E6400?

I had a E6400 sitting around 3Ghz on a Abit AB9 Pro -the board wouldn't let me past 386 FSB. That was with std voltages, upping them didn't help.

I have a DS4 now and slowly upping the speed...

yeah reading it back it does sound stupid. thing is i could not get higher than 2.8 on my 6300 and i was offered a 6400 for next to no money and so swapped and sold my 6300 on that popular auction site. so it cost nothing to do the upgrade but i saw a healthy increase

It seems that the 6300 is more popular than the 6400.

Apart from a little saving - only a 10 pound different if you shop around. Why are people picking the 6300 over the 6400?

I chickened out of the order at the last minute.

I'm thinking of swapping the E6300 and PC6400 for an E6400 and PC5300. It works out cheaper.

I know this will be faster at stock but will the PC5300 limit my overclocks in any way?

edit: what I'm trying to ask is will running the RAM on a divider impact the performance? and if so by how much?

i have a e6300 l629b and it does 3.2ghz with the vcore set to 1.25 in the bios,and 3.5ghz with 1.4vcore.both with 460 and 500 fsb's respectivly.

this is a fantastic overclocker and it seems to oc more than some 64 an 6600's i have seen.

at 3.2 my temps are about 33-35c idle 54max and at 3.5 it is about 40-41c idle and 62c max.

both are run with ram at 1:1,460-1:1 at 3.2ghz and 500-1:1 at 3.5ghz.

here is my pi 1mb at 3.5ghz

Okay then, so the consensus is an E6300 over the E6400.

What about the RAM? Would the PC5300 limit the overclock to 2.8GHz and would it be faster at this speed with PC6400?

You really need some pc6400 C4 for the e6300. You'll be looking for 450+ out of it.

Like has been said already go for the E6300 and the better RAM. The E6400 is pretty much just a waste of money.

Will any old PC6400 RAM do the job?

I'm not bothered about going above 2.8GHz. I'd like to leave a little headroom for stability/longevity.

edit: just noticed the C4 in Cob's post. So any CAS 4 stuff then? will 4-4-4-15 do?

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX (2x1GB) - £187.99

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB) - £211.49

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) - £199.74

G.Skill 2GB DDR2 NR PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit (F2-6400 - £176.24

G.Skill 2GB DDR2 PK PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS4 Dual Channel Kit (F2-6400 - £193.86

The first corsair and first g-skill are both Cas5 but cheaper. Best value Cas4 would be the G-Skill for £193.86. However from what I've seen on the forums Geil seem to be the preferred choice so maybe worth the extra £6.

THe Gskill NR does not work with this mobo.

Just get the geil.

It will overclock to 1ghz+ with ease.

Allowing 7x 500 1:1

My buddy made that mistake, brought Gskill after ringing Ocuk to confirm it would be fine with the mobo, was told it will be fine, received bits, didnt work, sent memory back and got Geil, worked fine.

Here's what i got when tested my E6300, Ds4, Geil 6400.

For 24/7 usage 3.4ghz....3.5ghz is the highest i got with a super pi 1mb 16.4. :D

I did the same thing after G-Skill themselves assured me that the NR would work with the DS3 - it didn't. I RMA'd it to G-Skill and they replaced it with NQ which works "out-of-the-box".
