Upgrading 4090 to 5090 - minimising upgrade cost.

What are your guys thoughts on the yet to be implemented trump Tax tariff on imported China goods. A 40% tax if I read correctly on Chinese websites. While it has not gone in to effect I read that most vendors will have the 5090's already to beat the proposed changes.

While this shouldn't effect us in good old blighty traditionally the UK has stood with the US on policies regarding China. This is not a politically commentary post, just a post if it could possibly affect the pricing if the Trump tariff goes into effect.

Surely graphics cards get exported to China, not imported. That's how the US is able to block the 4090 from getting exported to China, hence the 4090D to get around the restrictions.

I think you are confusing a different matter. US government doesn’t want a powerful AI chip in the hands of the Chinese government so while NVIDIA corp is a US registered company the chips and all CPUs/gpus are actually made in Taiwan by TSMC.

The only way that TSMC can escape the restriction is to move it fabrication prices to places like vietnam and Thailand . Which they are currently are doing. Can they beat the deadline by when it comes into effect. Depends how fast capital hill pushes it through.

This will affect all of the lineup not just the 5090. Also AMD.

I would keep your 4090. It will last you a good few years. Upgrade when you NEED to.
That’s good advice. But on the flip side if they don’t upgrade. Whatever follows next will have the tariff applied. It doesn’t take the law makers on capital hill that long to push a bill through but to undo it takes forever.

Most vendors will have the 5090’s before the end of the year and before CES, Great timing yes? Not for CES but to beat the Bill. Wait till used 5090’s the prices will be driven up.

I can’t see our government following the USA on these tarrifs. I can see the price rises affecting us though because it gives companies an excuse to raise prices.

Like when Britain decided to ditch the Huawei 5g infrastructure because the US didn’t want anything to do with a firm like Huawei even though technically it was superior and cheaper? Yeah right.

Britain will follow the US to repay 'The Debt' which can never be repaid.

There's barely anything worth playing that justifies a 4090. AAA gaming is an absolute dumpster fire and I feel like if any card lets you skip a generation it's the 4090.

I picked up a used 7900 XTX for £560 a few months back on the member's market and have been very happy with it so that could be an option if you desperately need to free up funds. I would add that if you're in any way value orientated then you really shouldn't be looking at buying a 5090 though. You are not the target audience for that card.

It absolutely boggles my mind when I see people trying to buy 4090s and stuff on the MM but asking the seller to hold it for a few days so they don't go into their overdraft. If you're in that position, what the hell are you doing buying any PC components, let alone a 4090?

This post made me laugh so much. It like those peeps who say they could afford one but don;t want one and the ones who claim to not get one due to making a stand against Nvidia business and pricing strats then low key 6 months later you see them join in the 4090 discussion.

I never worry about going into debt about my 4090 addiction as I only buy from one retailer. The offical 4090 supplier on OCUK @LtMatt

A fair example of which I’m sure there are many more. However given the state of the economy, It seems like economic suicide to follow the US if they implement these tarrifs, especially considering the recent budget. I can’t see the US implementing the tarrifs in the first place given the inflation it could cause.

You would think right. But given how TSMC is now moving it entire fabrication plant at significant cost from Taiwan to Vietnam there has got to be some element of truth for them to do this or thinking not a case of if, but when.

Companies like Apple, NVIDIA, Amd and so on will be putting pressure on TSMC and of course it would TSMC interests to do so even though it would cost a substantial amount as long term it knows the only fabrication plant that can meet the technical and engineering processes for these companies latest and greatest chips.

They might be moving due to China getting itchy seeing Russia invade Ukraine, rather than the threat of tariffs. Although the sanctions if that were to happen would make the potential tariffs look like a bargain. At least that’s what I would assume given the rhetoric. I could be wrong though.

That a possibility but if china were to invade Taiwan they would gain TSMC which not just be disastrous for high end cpu/gpu but would flood the market with cheap Chinese knocks off.

The amount of people i know of over the years that haven't had the money to pay their bills but go out an buy the latest £1,000 mobile phone is nuts
And then normally end up breaking or losing the phone in less then 12 months and has the phone on a 24 or 36 month contract (Then rinse & repeat doing this )

That's because they can recoup some of the outlay by selling it to CEX (by simply keeping the sim).
