hey guys,

i was going to move from my FX8320 to a i7 4970k but decided not to and to invest the money into other parts of my PC.

im wanting to move all storage to SSD so they can be hidden behind the mobo tray of a corsair 450D.

atm i have a OCZ vertex 2E 120gb for my OS apps and BF4 and a 500GB HDD for steam and origin games.

so what would you choose to replace these with?
i dont want to spend huge amounts but i want fast read and write spead
will RAID 0 the game drives if its worth it
say £250 for the SSD's is my limit :)

That would be fine for my game drive.

I still need to replace the OCZ as its a 3.5 drive so it wont fit the SSD bracket :(

I will just get the same samsung SSD in 120gb then unless theres a cheaper way of doing it?

How full are your current drives? If possible I'd go for one 500GB drive for just now, then look to add on another when you need it as hopefully prices will continue to fall and quality will continue to improve.

I think i have 12gb left on the OCZ drive, and not sure about the 500gb HDD ill check when i get home from work

Apologies, I'd not realised its was 3.5". I don't think you can get a single 1Tb or 2 x 500Gb drives under budget. I think a 500Gb + 256Gb will be doable with MX100's

I'd avoid 120/128GB drives as they tend to have slower read/writes due to having fewer memory chips on the PCB. 250GB is my minimum. I have a Sandisk extreme 250Gb, a Crucial m500 250Gb and a Seagate 500GB SSD in my PC with no mech. drives at all. The seagate was a good choice and cost me about £170 3-4 months ago.

I would look at a single 256 to 500GB and just manage games more effectively and uninstall them when not needed.

If you have a ADSL connection I would keep the mechanical drive in a draw with the games backed up on it. So don't need to fully download them in the future if want to replay them.

Providing you have space on mechanical drive I would create a backup image in Steam of each installed game. Make sure it creates a single file instead of disk1, disk2, etc. Or you might be able to just copy and paste game folder across and download patches.

For Origin you just copy and paste the game folder from mechanical drive to SSD.

There can be advantages, for example I have games on one SSD and O/S on another. I can image the O/S without it including all the games.

so long as you're not going below the 250GB barrier or so then you can have multiple drives if you want, without any real penalty. That said, I prefer single larger drives as this improves wear levelling and avoids any old badly written games being a pain with hardcoded drive letters etc forcing me to play around with what goes where. (These games are rare anyway and can normally be pushed to other drives with a symbolic link to trick them, but it's hassle and I don't like hassle!)

If you like refreshing your OS often though then as zola says small drives for only OS can be useful.
