Upgrading and unsure what needs upgrading

My set up is
Power supply xfx 850w
16gb ram
1tb hard drive
Amd radeon r9 390 8gb ddr5
Amd phenom quad core 3.2ghz processor.

Think i'm mostly looking at a processor upgrade any recommendations?

You could go Haswell and re-use the RAM.

If you have deeper pockets then you're looking at either Skylake or Haswell-E

Phenom looks like the thing to change.

Im guessing you have a normal ATX case?

Exactly which Phenom do you have? Is it overclocked? Is it overclockable? Where are you seeing performance problems? Because you may just need a good CPU cooler and a SSD.

Your motherboard has an AM3 socket. The fastest AMD parts need AM3+. You aren't going to see any real benefit going to the fastest Phenom, which you'd likely have to buy second hand anyway.

Going off the specs you listed, the absolute biggest upgrade to your rig would be an SSD, I can't tell you how much of a night and day difference they make. I actually brought life into a 2.8ghz core2duo laptop from 6 years ago by replacing the 400gig hard drive with an SSD
