Just wondering what to add to these to be able to play battlefield 4 @ 1920 x 1080 ... nice and smooth :D
Basically I already own:
Case: Coolermaster k380
Monitor: Iiyama prolite E2209HDS
GFX: VTX3D HD 7870 Black Boost Edition 2048MB
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 2x8GB DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz
Power supply: Corsair Builder Series CX 600w
CPU:AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black edition (to be overclocked)

Ive not a clue on modern motherboards so recommendations would be appreciated ;)
Also need a good cpu cooler and Hard drive.

looking to spend around £250-£300

Thanks in advance :)

I would suggest you need a CPU upgrade.

EDIT: just checked CPU-Z :)

You'll need a motherboard upgrade too...

Intel option:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £185.99
1 x Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £45.95
1 x Toshiba (7K1000.D) 500GB SATA 6GB/s 32MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA050) HDD £39.95
1 x Thermalright True Spirit 120 REV A [BW] Performance CPU Cooler £24.98
Total : £308.27 (includes shipping : £9.50).

AMD option

YOUR BASKET
1 x AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8320 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor - Retail £124.99
1 x Gigabyte 990XA-UD3 AMD 990X (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £89.99
1 x Toshiba (7K1000.D) 500GB SATA 6GB/s 32MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA050) HDD £39.95
1 x Thermalright True Spirit 120 REV A [BW] Performance CPU Cooler £24.98
Total : £291.31 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Though the 8320 isn't in stock ATM.

The AMD option also gives you the ability to Xfire 7870 (will need a new PSU) in the future. :)

Though the 3570k is a slightly better CPU.

As it's not out yet it's impossible to say for sure, but you'll probably be mostly ok with what you've got. If the CPU requirements are higher, the cheapest upgrade to guaranteed high performance will be a 970/990 board + an FX-8320.

I could stretch to £350 to include a new CPU aswell, or I could be better off getting a ps4 ...
I take it the Phenoms are old hat now?

Phenoms are getting on a bit but perform better than many people think in most modern games.

BF4 is optimised for 8 cores - and will be best off with an 8320/8350 or an i7 (the latter obviously much more expensive).

Are you overclocking?
If you're not overclocking go for a Haswell Xeon and cheap board.

If you're overclocking, a Z87 board and CPU, at least I would personally.

You know Haswell has a refresh so you can throw in an i7 next year, whereas while SR is touted AM3+, it could always change.

Of course, I'm assuming you're going to play more than BF4 :p.

BF4 will be optimised for AMD, not for 8 core specifically.

Tomb Raider was developed for AMD, that doesn't use 8 cores.

DICE used 8350s for the big multiplayer demos of BF4, and we know it's optimised for AMD CPUs, so it's a safe bet it'll use all 8.

Won't be optimized for AMD specifically either.
It can make use of instruction sets that threads that both Intel/AMD have CPU's of, it's just AMD needs the boost from the extra threads/instruction sets.

That case limits your choice of coolers to 155mm tall. The TR120 won't fit which has been spec'd for you as like many of the decent heatsinks it's 160mm tall.

You can infact remove the 8320 from the basket and still use your 965BE and OC it. See how it does and maybe consider the CPU upgrade for when Steamroller lands

You could look at just banging in a secondhand 1090T and then see what happens with SR.
I wouldn't personally buy an AM3+ board now and hope for SR, you'd be pretty peeved if they throw another socket into the mix.

I'd personally prefer to get an intel setup. I'm not expecting AMD to amaze me with SR. Although it sounds like he does need a new mobo any which way as his current mobo is DDR2. I thought I'd atleast point out he can upgrade cheaply reusing the 965 and at the least look to use an 8320 later.

I'd prefer the i5K over a 8320 anyway.

A Thuban second hand can be had for peanuts, and BF4 will use the cores, he's instantly got an extra 50% CPU at his disposal, and BF3 can max out a Thuban if it's low clocked, BF4 will be able to do the same.

Most cost effective upgrade.

I'm in two minds about SR, mainly because I see a lot of AM3+ recommendations based on SR upgrade path, and I wouldn't be surprised if AMD turned around and brought a new socket out.

Steamroller is part of the same family as Bulldozer/Priledriver, it's all but guaranteed it will be in the same socket. But regardless, the 8320/8350 will be more than sufficient to run BF4 at max settings, we already know that for sure.

The 7870 LE is fine - it'd be pointless upgrading that unless you went to 2x7950s or something.

So, Kaveri needing a new socket? Kaveri was all but guaranteed to be FM2.
Bulldozer actually working on AM3 but AMD simply didn't allow it? Bulldozer was all but guaranteed to be AM3.

We'll casually forget about that.

This has nothing to do with the question, and is purely speculation anyway. If Steamroller isn't available for AM3+, given it was launched for this family, it would **** off even AMD fanboys.

Why is it when someone counter argues one of your points you come out with "This isn't relevant" stuff?

I gave you two recent examples in history where AMD from out of the blue have changed socket, FM2-FM2+ isn't any different from AM3+ to a new socket, FM2 was also newer than AM3+
